Description Search for a Smile – Photo 1

“I smile!” Lee protested as Pete made a few adjustments to the settings on his mobile phone. “I smile all the time! Besides, why is this such a big deal? They’re just old photos.”

“Lee,” Pete lowered his hands and looked Lee straight in the eyes. “We’ve unpacked over thirty framed pictures of you going back more than twenty years, and you’re not smiling in a single one of ‘em!”

“I just think it’d be nice to have one or t..two where you’re smiling,” Billy contributed. He didn’t want Lee to feel pressured.

“Just for the apartment,” Pete added.

Lee surrendered. “I’m not gonna get any peace ‘til you’re happy, am I?”

“Don’t think of it like that,” Pete said. “Think of it like we’re taking a few ‘family photos’.”

“Well, since you put it like that…” Lee stood up from the old wooden chair and crossed the workshop floor. Lee’s old boss, Matty, had kindly allowed Pete to use the workshop as a photography studio for just this purpose and while Pete didn’t have all the equipment for a professional photographer, the lights in the workshop came pretty close to ideal when it came to taking pictures. They had set up a large grey plasterboard wall, and Pete had got a hold of a few props to try to recreate some of what Lee had described as ‘happier times’.

“We’re just gonna do something simple for now,” Pete said as he dragged an old leather armchair in front of his makeshift grey backdrop. “Have a seat,” he instructed. “Just relax, like you’re at home.”

Lee sat in the armchair and smoothed down his black T-shirt.

“Nah…” Pete said as he looked closely at the screen of his phone. “Something’s missing… here…” Pete shrugged off his leather jacket and tossed it to Lee. “Put this on.”

Lee shrugged and pulled on the jacket. “It’s a bit tight,” he noted.

“It’s supposed to be,” Pete returned. “It shows off your body.”

“Fair enough,” Lee sat down again. Pete adjusted his position as he concentrated on framing the picture.

“Okay… and… smile!”

Lee smiled. Pete took the picture. Pete reviewed the picture, and his shoulders sagged.

“I think we need to go over what an actual ‘smile’ is, Lee,” said Pete.

Smiles can be a little over-rated. You can tell someone is amused even if their mouth shape looks dead-pan. Eyes, brows and other body language can convey just as much as a smile can.
