Description A blade of my own design that I made in Maya. I haven't actually textured it yet; all the colour and the runes were splashed on in Photoshop. I'm currently working on a render pipeline that will do this style of cel-shading automagically.

Damn, that looks good. Looks more like a 'Dark' Phoenix Blade like this though

Cheers! The guy who wields this isn't exactly a nice guy and he has the old identity-hiding-black-armour-thing going on, hence the large amounts of black.

That, and contrast.

Ah, fair enough then. How's the advanced course treating ya?

It's brilliant! We've learnt so much more since it started, it makes the DAV course look like child's play.

We finished the first project just before the easter weekend. We had to research, design, model and fully rig a character in two weeks. It's as stressful as it sounds (had just a week for all the modelling and rigging), but I was so pleased when I managed to finish it. Learnt a lot too.

IMO rigging is one of the coolest things to do. Sure, you have to be all neat and tidy so the animator who'll be using it knows what he doing, but you get to make everything move according to your will. That, and I like programming stuff...

BTW, my character was a cartoon turkey.

Dang, that sounds crazy. I'm glad I'm taking a gap year, I don't think I'd be ready for that much.

Was rigging easy to learn? I've had an animation in mind that I really wanna make once I've got a good PC, but of course, that means I'd be doing the whole thing on my own, and I can't say I know how to rig.

It definitely sounds like you're having fun though. Makes me look forward to next year even more.

Most of the class found rigging annoying and confusing, but it was easy enough for me, probably because programming stuff comes naturaly to me. It's one of those things that's complicated but logical.

What animation were you thinking of doing; the Hyper Beam one or did you have something else in mind?

Nah, something new. It's inspired by a song.
Icarus - Two Steps From Hell.

Hopefully there are some easy to follow tutorials online, but I get the feeling that I'd probably fall under the category of "the rest of the class" if I were there. Heh.

I've heard that the Maya Help files actually has some good tutorials on everything, but I haven't yet checked that, so, I dunno. Plus, you can always just wing me a message if you need any tips or troubleshooting. I don't mind.

Oh cool, I'm sure I will ask you for some kind of help down the line. But it will be a while away, Armageddon funds come before computer. It'll come together one way or another though

I'm sure it will.

One last thing. Since your going to be rigging and animating your own models, you should read up about topology, otherwise it could end up a mess.

I'll make a note of that, cheers.
Hopefully this animation comes out good, and helps my application for the advanced class.

You should be fine, you'd be practically guaranteed a space since you did DAV.

Didn't pass though. But I'll just knock their socks off anyway, so they won't be able to decline me hehe.

Whether you passed or not doesn't matter, just what you have in your portfolio. I wound up failing the DAV course, but I'm still here. (I really should be working right now.)
