Description My pencils for the first issue cover of writer Jamie Gambell's new comic book, THE HERO CODE.
The characters are The Black Wraith, Myth, and Optiman. Please do check 'em out at Jamie's website, www.herocode.net for more info on the book. It promises to be a great read from an outstanding writer.
I had a lot of fun drawing this one from artist Dan Smith's conceptual designs for The Black Wraith and Optiman. I designed Myth myself
Big thanks to Jamie for the opportunity to work on this with him. Be on the lookout for the cover to THE HERO CODE issue two in the next few weeks.
This cover is drawn in pencil on 11x17 bristol board with a 4H graphite lead while I was watching the movie, INCEPTION over and over

wow. do you pencil this tightly when you ink your own work?

Yep, but I seldom ink myself. Most jobs I'm doing anymore are colored over the pencils.

Boyann [2011-03-02 19:35:32 +0000 UTC]

Inspirational and motivational, indeed. Splendidly well done.
I myself am a hard-lead penciler [F, H, 2H & 3H] and it's amazing to see how dark the scan turned to be, considering the illo's done with 4H. Wood-clinched pencil, leadholder or micro-lead mechanical pencil? One sheet with rough-to-the-finished drawing or a light-box clean-up? Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewEdwardJohnson In reply to Boyann [2011-03-02 19:47:58 +0000 UTC]

I just darkened up the scan on Photoshop
I use a leadholder, and I just draw right on the board. I pencil lightly, erase over it lightly--The 4H keeps the image there, and then I draw back over it. I'm also obsessive about keeping the paper clean while I work, and cover where ever my hand is by taping a piece of paper over the previous pencilled areas. I am a nut...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Boyann In reply to DrewEdwardJohnson [2011-03-02 20:18:27 +0000 UTC]

Thanx for the explanation. Yup, I love leadholders too, Caran D'Ache, Mars Staedtler & Koh-i-Noor Technigraph are my most favourite brands, but Berol Turquoise, Schwann and Lyra are the 2mm lead brands.
Nothing nutty there... I use a piece of cardboard under my drawing hand's palm to prevent skin to touch graphite on paper surface, with two-three kneaded erasers at hand - one for blue lead only, others for graphite [one for 'rolling over' to make the lines fainter, the other harder to knead for rubbing out].
All the best, Sir
