DOWNLOAD BEFORE USING THIS!!! You'll want to be able to grab the brush and texture at their native size!!!

Here's a simple tutorial on how to get my signature gouache brush in Photoshop. As always, feel free to play around with the settings to get something better/more comfortable for you and your style.

Now you guys can stop begging me for this. XD

Take care and lemme know if you have questions!

Oh, you are too kind.  So glad you like it!  Have you modified it to suit your needs better?

loish In reply to DrewGreen [2014-01-03 22:32:47 +0000 UTC]

i usually lower the opacity so i can get a kind of painted effect :] but for the rest exactly like you make it here!

DrewGreen In reply to loish [2014-01-07 03:16:33 +0000 UTC]

That's awesome!  I've only recently been playing with opacity and flow with brushes, too.  It's weird that it took me so long to really experiment with them.  (I'm guilty of staying in my comfort zone for way too long, trying to fix that.)

loish In reply to DrewGreen [2014-01-13 09:48:44 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i change brushes about once every year, hahah. opacity/flow are the only settings i mess with. so i know the feeling!

DrewGreen In reply to loish [2014-01-23 02:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Smart.  I should make it a point to change things up every now and then.  It'd only do me good!

i cant seem to get the brush to match the one shown im not exactly sure what i did wrong since i cant find most of the settings you said should be changed i have pse 8 at the moment

DrewGreen In reply to reverielly [2012-09-04 06:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, I've heard of many similar complaints from Photoshop Elements users, so I'm not sure the brush can be achieved in that program. I don't have Elements myself, so I am afraid I can't help you. I'm sorry!

BlazingStarO In reply to DrewGreen [2013-11-22 01:00:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's quite a shame... Looks like I'll have to start investing in getting myself some PS CS6! Till then, I'll be stuck using my PS Elements. Oh well. *shrugs*

Can you please make this brush downloadable? No matter what I do, I cannot for the life of me, get this to work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to ToothpasteGringo [2012-06-05 07:33:21 +0000 UTC]

Are you using Photoshop or Elements?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ToothpasteGringo In reply to DrewGreen [2012-06-05 17:53:22 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop CS4. I believe it's because Photoshop has never recognized my tablet, no matter how many times I update my drivers and restart. It looks just like yours does in the brush presets up until I have to apply pen pressure.

I have Photoshop Elements 6.
I made the brush and I have the sand texture, but I don't understand the bottom and how I get the brush to work. :c
I need help with the presets part, I can't find that icon or anything.
I'm stupid.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrewGreen In reply to cotidians [2011-12-29 05:35:22 +0000 UTC]

You're not stupid. I've gotten similar comments about issues with Photoshop Elements and making this brush and part of me assumes it's not completely possible, but I'm not sure. The truth is, I don't know Elements well because I've only barely used it years ago. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I only recommend that you poke around google and around the program itself to see what you can find. Good luck!

Hey, great tutorial...
Do you know how I can do a brush like this in GIMP?
Thanks...
Liz

Cat-Fishy In reply to artelizdesouza [2011-12-02 23:22:17 +0000 UTC]

Heyheyhey, fellow GIMPie here. Just want to point out that GIMP 2.6+ is in fact compatible with Photoshop brushes! We just need a download of the brush itself, rather than putting it together from a tutorial like this.

artelizdesouza In reply to Cat-Fishy [2011-12-04 01:05:50 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks for the tip!! I'll look for a great gouache brush like this one!! Thanks!

DrewGreen In reply to artelizdesouza [2011-11-28 06:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I've never actually used GIMP before. Good luck!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cat-Fishy In reply to DrewGreen [2011-12-02 23:24:21 +0000 UTC]

As I just said, GIMP can use PS brushes. Could we mebbe have the brush itself, already put together? Would be greatly appreciated!

artelizdesouza In reply to Cat-Fishy [2011-12-04 01:07:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it would be fantastic! I would give credits when I use it in a digital painting!
