Description A copy of Peter Madsens cover for "Valhall, tredje stora boken" (Valhall, the third big book) representing the head of nordic gods, Odin (some write it Oden). I recomend reading all the valhall comics, I know you can get them atleast in Danish, Swedish and Finnish, they're really fun and inventive!

A little bit of background on Odin:

The germanic mythology has inspired people trough the ages, from court jesters (you know, those medievial clowns that had a wierd hat) to Tolkien (Odin is quite a bit like Gandalf, for example) and the composer wagner. The head god in GM (Germanic mythology, GM from now on) is Oden, and I've heard that there still are actually a cult or two that still worship him.
Some say he's father to everyone ("allfadir") while other sources say he's more like a brother to them. His backgroud changes quite a bit locationally, as does his name. In Britain, for example, he was worshipped as "Woden". If some Icelander happens to come across this I would very much appreciate giving some enlightement on this matter (I presume the truth is found in the Edda books?).
Here's what I'm absolutely sure of:
-He has shapeshifting abilities, also sometimes he dresses up as an old man.
-He has an unsatisfiable thirst for knowlegde, in one story he sacrified one of his eyes (it is not known which one) so that he would be allowed to drink from a spring of knowlegde while in an other he hang himself on a tree in order to learn the secrets of runewriting. Allthough he's supposed to be allseeing he has two ravens, Hugin and Munin that comes with news for him every morning
-He has a magical spear, Gungnir, which is forged by dwarves and never misses. He also has an eight legged horse that goes by the name Sleipnir.
-he employs (I'm not sure if "employs" is excactly the word use...) Valkyries, that bring dead soldiers to Valhalla, kingdom of the gods

I really like your works... but I think Odin has a little more muscles in the arm

Hehe, I thought the drawing looked familiar, but tell me how big is the third big book? What matter does it deal with?

Looks funny. I always imagined Odin to be somewhat muscular and fear-inducing.

yeah, me too
however I think that when Peter Madsen drew this guy he took the general idea from a old wooden (I think) statue from sweden. Although this version looks more like an wizard/mage/shaman/whatever I'd still personally fancy the "real" version, fits more into the general image...

well, you appearantly didn't read trough my comment very carefully, hehe
The original character is drawn by the Danish (I think he's Danish...) comicbook writer/drawer (=maker?) Peter Madsen.
And I can tell you that his versions is much better...mine has too many annoying little errors...

yeah your right! I like this one version of Odin in "Ragnarok" in Myung's manwha.. he was depicted as still strong god.. mm.. the same characteristics.. but he was more muscular.. tehehe..

If I remeber correctly, he's originally described as a quite muscular fella, so it would be nice if I got a look at that version. Just one question remains: what's "Myung's Manwha?"

Myung lee-Jin is the teen who made "Ragnarok", which is an adaptation of the ever famous Norse Mythology of the same title, which is now (you probably know) the very popular MMORPG game..

Actually I don't know...I'm not big into mmorpgs either. I've been trying to find a picture of "Ragnarok Odin" but I can't find any, so you wouldn't happen to have a sample stored somewhere? It would be nice if I got to look at it

Genemir In reply to DrGFreeman [2005-11-03 11:38:10 +0000 UTC]

mm.. scanlations are scans of the comic "Ragnarok" with english translations.. hence the term scanlations.. mmm.. Odin first appeared on Volume 1, so I guess you can start from there. ^^~

oh, the word "scanlations" doesn't appear in any dictionaries of mine so...I'll try and get a copy of volume 1 though, but I doubt I'll find it in my local library...

Even if it is a copy- you got the shading done pretty well, and the beard seems quite meticulous. You could try creating your own pieces by putting together several copied bits together. Here's what I mean- if you wanted to draw Odin without a 100% copy, you could find /separate/ images of a viking helmet, a spear, a cloak ect. Not only would you probebly end up modifying the look of each of those bits, but the combination would look more original as well. Here's an un-secret: my "hmmm" drawing was formed of a picture of a stoat's head that I copied then modified to make more expressive/human, and of a crossbow whose prongs (the bow bit) I modified to look wooden instead of metal. If I showed you the two photos I used it would be almost impossible to realise that I used them as bases because they ended up changing in the little details.

I hope you understand what I'm saying here, as I'm kind of rambling. I'm telling you this because you come across as a particularily excellent copier, especially in this piece. You could use that to your advantage.

Don't know about exelent...It has several errors (for example the head is way too broad) but I'm learning as I go.
At first I actually did think about combining some different drawings into this. Mu first plan was to draw him riding on Sleipnir with einherjahrs flying behind him and the ravens Hugin and Munin about to land on his shoulders, but I thought i'd just a bit of like practize on the main character first...
