Description
Notosuchians continued to thrive in the Cenozoic of South America, diversifying into all sorts of bizarre and novel forms that ranged from small digging omnivores to massive apex predators. The Sphagesauroids were one such example, producing several families of heavily armored herbivores. The oldest and most basal members of two derived groups (the Moraesuchids and the Scutosuchids) first appear at Cabeza Blanca. The smaller of the two was Loxosuchus, a narrow jawed, heavily armoured herbivore possessing enlarged, spiny osteoderms at the shoulders. It's teeth were small and leaf shaped, suggesting a diet composed of relatively soft vegetation. Overall, the animal was about the size of a sheep. The larger genus was named Galileosuchus and was a basal member of Moraesuchidae. This was a heavily built herbivore measuring roughly 3.5m long and weighing about 200-250kg. The skull was boxy, with strong jaws and teeth, indicating a diet of bark, roots and tough vegetation, while the body was broad and covered in a dense coating of osteoderms.
