Theres a soft, sad atmospheric quality produced by the fuzzy focus, and the moment of clarity towards the centre. It's a lot like the interludes you get in war films, when the solider ends up walking through a field of flowers (etc) away from the bloodshed physically, but not mentally. The whole series of these shots is very hauntingly beautiful.
