Description
You will never know, and neither do I, how far El-ahrairah went on his journey into the dark. You see the top of a great stone sticking out of the ground. How far is it to the middle? Split the stone. Then you'll know.
The next book I read this year is Watership Down. I have never seen any movies/TV series, etc. so I went into into the book completely blind. And I was not disappointed! Probably one of the best books I've read this year. 
For a change of pace I drew this cover traditionally--colored pencil on black paper, referencing one of the tales of El-ahrairah, a mythical character in the book (that's why he's got some vegetation for ears, whiskers and tail).

I have a mound of books to read already so I won't be getting to Animal Farm anytime soon. I already read 1984 a few years ago, so I won't be doing that one.

Oooh, yay you depicted the story about the lettuce leaves for ears - I think it's the first time I've seen this.Β Was always my favourite of the El-ahrairah stories!Β It is a brilliant book, one of my all time favourites ^_^
I really love how you've used the black paper here - the white highlights on the fur is really effective!Β This would make an excellent book cover!Β Even though you've never seen the film, the shapes and colours you've depicted are a great homage to the style of opening of the 1978 film.Β
The film is definitely worth a watch; beautiful, iconic 2D animation and soundtrack, brilliant voice cast, iconic for its extra violent and graphic depiction of the events in the book. (And yet still rated PG!)

Omg yes! I love watership down! You should watch the 70's movie first, then the tv cartoon series, and then the Netflix version. All three versions are pretty good. Well mostly the movie is the best one of all, it's such a classic to me ^^

It seemed to me that it was difficult to depict his ears and tail after they were lost. I thought it must be very scary. But you did it reliably and beautifully!

the movie was so upsetting visually, haha. it goes into some detail in the books, but as a kid seeing the violence and blood happen on the screen was very striking compared to imagining through text!
i think my favorite parts of the book were the bits aboutΒ el-ahrairah. i'm glad you chose him to represent the cover, i think that's a great way to show the culture and mythology of the rabbits rather than just showing the characters themselves.Β

This is an amazing piece! I love the colors and how you designed El-Ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inle.
As for the adaptations, there's the 1978 film, the animated series (1999-2001), and the Netflix series.
Beginning with the 1978 film, it is considered as a controversial masterpiece. Controversial, mainly because it has strong animal violence and is rated PG. A masterpiece because of the beautiful music and the amazing animation and voice cast.
On the other hand, the violence in the animated series is more kid/family-friendly. Although praised by younger audiences, fans of the novel and the 1978 film gave the series mixed reviews.
And finally, the 2018 Netflix series, or "ministries", according to Wikipedia. While many viewers praise the narrative and performances of the voice cast, most of them have criticized the animation that was used in the series.Β

Like Dragondoodle I read my teenage copy into disintegration. I have a second copy which looks like a book-version of the Velveteen Rabbit: much loved. The movie tried but failed to capture the magic of the book; however its theme-song "Bright Eyes" by Art Garfunkle ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGyQmH⦠) was one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

I don't really remember that particular quote, but...Ooh good book! I read it before I saw the movie, though at the time I DID know there was a movie...it was just hard to find when I looked for it at the video rental place. (back when...video rental places were still a thing...I feel old. 
Anyway, I love how kind of...aboriginal-ish? this looks.
