Description Time to start introducing how the world has changed thanks to the presence of one sentient robot.

Now we have other 'bots (makes sense. People are inspired by what they see), though as you'll see they're not "alive" as Jupiter is. Just conveniences.

And we have a Jefferson Davis day and a familiar flag. Those of you who know your US history can make a couple of guesses as to what that means.

EEEKKKK! That robot came out of nowhere.

Yaay robots!
You really nailed that urban grey color of the background

Those pretty purple eyes make the robots look rather friendly. Interesting.

Really interesting concept that the South was allowed to secede, I'd always thought about that, what with living in the South. Do you have an idea what state this would be set in?

Hmm... I hadn't considered yet. Maybe it should be Tennessee. Nobody ever talks about Tennessee.

As someone who was born in North Carolina and has a friend from Tennessee, that sounds like a neat place to set it.

ExterminatorExploder In reply to DrZime [2014-07-04 03:12:09 +0000 UTC]

Nor the Carolinas, I wonder why. But Tennessee sounds excellent. Just the correct mix of suburbia and Southern for a technological favored setting

... i love and hate alternate realities. love because it is fun to imagine how certain events can change the future so drastically, and hte because it reminds me that my reality is such a thin strand of chance occurrences and key points.

also, I think I see a hint at racial issues in the background of the last panel...

DrZime In reply to HuffingtontheOnly [2014-07-03 00:13:55 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry about the last panel. There's no race issue going on there. Just another robot handing out a free flag.

HuffingtontheOnly In reply to DrZime [2014-07-03 00:38:19 +0000 UTC]

huh. apparently it changes down south too. Which makes me wonder what other issues prevent the American countries from combining again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to HuffingtontheOnly [2014-07-03 00:48:05 +0000 UTC]

Yup. Slavery was of course an issue between the North and South, but there were a lot of other problems between the two that lead to the South wanting to secede in the first place.
In this alternate timeline we can just assume that the governments are too different at this point to ever want to annex.

HuffingtontheOnly In reply to DrZime [2014-07-03 02:52:27 +0000 UTC]

fair enough. sorry, but history and politics is one of my intruges, and now I'm trying to picture immigration laws and how the treaties go and such. and how Europe fared with their conflicts.

Yup! Different countries.

OoO, robots just running in the traffic. I like this city already

LockmanCapulet [2014-07-02 13:47:53 +0000 UTC]

The Confederacy, possessing lots of farmland and sensibly lots of robotic/mechanical workers to tend said farmland, repurposed said robots for combat and won the Civil War.

Either that or Otto lives in the early 1900s southern Georgia town of Cold Sassy, but I'm guessing the former.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to LockmanCapulet [2014-07-02 15:56:24 +0000 UTC]

Sounds plausible!
Considering people didn't really get into airplane-building until the 1900s, I'd think that robot building would begin somewhere around that time, too.

At any rate! I decided in this timeline I'd go the more subtle route -- the North just let the South secede. There was no civil war.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LockmanCapulet In reply to DrZime [2014-07-03 02:50:09 +0000 UTC]

huh. In either case, is it correct to assume human slavery was replaced/phased out by the more complacent and durable and much less ethically questionableΒ robotic alternative?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to LockmanCapulet [2014-07-03 03:00:28 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes. Slavery died out long ago.

Horizontal traffic lights? Robots with confederate flags? Like I said, Zime. It's the small details that bring a sense of realism or plausibility to what is essentially a science fiction story. Keep it up!

DrZime In reply to shivan-dragon [2014-07-02 13:15:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Where Jaclyn and I are living in Texas they have horizontal traffic lights, so that's where that inspiration comes from. It's like we live in bizzaro world!

This has been really interesting so far. Definetly looking forward for more. Also is that the Confederate flag? So does that mean that in this timeline/universe the Confederate States won?

DrZime In reply to Fred7162 [2014-07-02 13:22:17 +0000 UTC]

Close! In my little timeline I decided that the North just let the South secede. So, no civil war.

The things I like changing the most are the little things you take for granted. So hopefully you'll find little surprises all over the place in this comic.
