Description Otto's derision for violence is a good segue way into more alternate history.
I mentioned in my previous comments that the Unions and Confederacy just split rather than one winning over the other in this history, but I've finally brought it into the comic itself.

I already hit a war story with my previous comic May the Rain Come, so there won't be much about it in this comic. All that really matters in this case is that one was avoided, with the help of Jupiter no less.

That makes sense! So Jupiter is the reason there wasn't a Civil War.
If only he was real. *sigh* lol.
Of course we Northerners aren't all bad. lol.Β

I've forgotten if you already mentioned, but was/is there issues with slavery and black civil right in this South, which was a large part of the American civil war

By this point in the history they're on par with the other first world countries as far as discrimination goes.
As for how long slavery lingered? Nyehhh... I leave that up to you to imagine. Some people say that slavery was already on its way out by the time the Civil War hit, and some people say it was at an all time high. Haha, I don't know who to believe anymore.

Buuut, race isn't an issue in this particular story so I'm not going to bother doing research into it.

Otto says that her wanting to hug him is a "Yankee" quirk, and yet he goes on to say that northerners are more violent? I think he just has a bias.

He definitely does.

I'm wondering if Otto is viewing the Confederacy's "non-violent" stance through rose colored glasses? Β Just my own thoughts but I really can't see the Confederacy sitting out World Wars 1 and 2, not as close as they were in relations with Britain. Β Of course, I'm pushing our reality on theirs.

"Major Wars" that I can think of, since 1860 (if this reality follows the basics of our own), are - Spanish American War, World War I, World War 2, Korea and Vietnam. Β There's about 8 minor "brush wars" that could be put into this list if you wanted to get really technical.

Awesome comic, again Zim, and sorry for my long absence.

For technicality's sake I've changed it to "several". :^)

I'm sure Otto's biased toward his own country. Most of us are!
I'll have to leave it up to your imagination as to why the South didn't get involved in these wars. I'm sure we could make up several reasons.

That sounds like a good move, keep the reader guessing as to similarities between our two universes.

Of course, it's human nature to believe "ours" is always just that bit better than "theirs".

One thing that I firmly believe, whether Otto's Confederacy or had our universes Confederacy become a full fledged independent nation, New England industrialist would have been headed south in record numbers trying to "help" the new nation industrialize. Β

"Psst, Richmond, wanna buy a factory?"

Jupiter didn't strike me as much of a pacifist lately.

Without his shields his best defense is offense, sadly.

Being an isolated introvert, Otto doesn't much care for physical contact.

LockmanCapulet [2015-04-06 05:32:49 +0000 UTC]

So the Confederacy stayed out of WWI, WWII, and (what I assume he means) Korea? Interesting. Unless the "three major wars" are different wars entirely.

DrZime In reply to LockmanCapulet [2015-04-06 12:12:02 +0000 UTC]

Yup - those are the big ones!

LockmanCapulet In reply to DrZime [2015-04-06 17:41:36 +0000 UTC]

So the current issue he refers to is whether to get involved in Vietnam? Interesting that the South has stayed out of the conflicts when the North hasn't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to LockmanCapulet [2015-04-06 18:51:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, wait you said Korean War. Sploops!
I was actually thinking the three major ones would be WWI, II and Vietnam.
Maybe I'll change it to four major wars instead - or a more obscure "several" so we can include the "small" wars we've had inbetween (my how it never ends).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LockmanCapulet In reply to DrZime [2015-04-08 02:44:23 +0000 UTC]

I guess Vietnam was a lot more controversial than Korea. And much less... efficacious, shall we say.

In any case it's interesting that the Cold War is still a thing with robots and teleporters. Say, I wonder if the line of presidents has changed at all? Is Reagan still commander-in-chief?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrZime In reply to LockmanCapulet [2015-04-08 11:21:31 +0000 UTC]

I think we'll leave the presidents unchanged.
