Description I'm iffy about this picture. The composition is lousy, the dragon is unoriginal, and the anatomy has gone all to hell, but on the other hand, I'm please with some of the textural effects I achieved. Good old brush options in Photoshop can make some pretty good scaley skin. Unfortunately, when I converted it to a JPEG, the highlights got messed up a bit. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy.

Charles-Burggraf [2006-08-22 15:08:47 +0000 UTC]

So, how'd do you use the brush tool to do skin textures, if you dont mind my asking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DSil In reply to Charles-Burggraf [2006-08-28 21:32:32 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, it's a bit hard to explain with just words. I might submit a tutorial sometime, not that you need any help with skin textures.

(To get rid of JPEG-related color problems, go to Edit>Color Settings and set Working Spaces>RGB to Monitor RGB.)

Nifty stuff, lovin' the scaldingly hot colors. Very atmospheric and the dragon's anatomy is worked out intelligently.

I rather like the wacky anatomy around the wings/shoulder joints; it's fun to see the big globs of muscle.

I'd say this is definitely a fun piece in terms of colors and textures. The scales look almost iridescent!

DSil In reply to rachaelm5 [2006-07-17 09:10:42 +0000 UTC]

That's the effect I was hoping for, so I'm glad it came across. Thanks so much for the comment.

BounceServal [2006-07-15 16:34:33 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry about the anatomy. Dragons don't exist, so who's to say you've got it wrong?

Anyhow, you got a really unique effect! I haven't seen too many Photoshop pieces with the sort of texture you've got going here... how'd you do it? It looks like you used a bunch of those "natural brushes" and some filters? (Do I spy with my little eye some dodge/burn?)

The whole picture looks really hot. (As in temperature). The lava is burning my eyes out! So bright!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DSil In reply to BounceServal [2006-07-16 02:25:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Glad ya liked the effect. For the texture I used a brush with the options set to Dual Brush and with Airbrush checked under Other Dynamics. Then I just found a couple that looked scaley, and set the brush mode to Linear Dodge for the highlights and Multiply for the shadows, using various colors. Then for scale details, I just used a small white brush. Aaaaaand that's about it. I guess I also used a couple layers with the mode set to Overlay to fool around with the contrast in different areas. Thanks for the comment!

I like this. You do have some great textures on the dragon, and I like the mix of the greens with the fiery oranges/reds/yellows of the background. Good dragon anatomy as well.
