As for the curls/hair ... geez, I don't know what to say ... lots of practice?
Start by drawing in the direction very lightly and then go over pieces when you're sure that's where you want them to go.

Yep, I guess I changed the end of the story. He's now wearing a crocodile harness and croc tooth earring.
