^^. So..first you'd need to sketch the hair.After that draw the dark areas with a smooth pencil. Look for details, there are often light hairs inside the dark areas so draw around them.After you finish the dark parts go over to the midtones. Use a medium pencil for them.Next you will fade the midtones into the highlight area .Now there are the highlights left.Shade them with a hard pencil like H.(you could also highlight by using a kneaded eraser).
Hope it helps a bit.Anyway..practice is the key for everything

thanks, that actually does help a lot...it's one of the hardest things to do- that, and shading skin. whenever i try to color someone's skin it looks messy and dark, so i always leave it white and don't bother with it. I have every pencil imaginable almost, including a 10B, so I assume it should be easy. but its not...
and jesus, coloring black hair is the worst!! >.<

You are very very welcome.Wow..10B, that's soo cool.As for the skin, don't press too hard on the pencil(I personally use pencils like H-2H for the skin and HB-B to shade it)^^

yeah i bought the 10B from a japanese stationary store in NY. those pencils are like butter, I love them...
oh, great! i have those. lol. is there a trick to it? like...so that i wont end up putting patterns on their face? i mean that if i shade in circles, i dont want the circles to scan- i also don't want them to look spanish when i scan XD because they are pale.

^-^Well, it shouldn't look dark if you use hard pencils.Try to smooth things out.The more detail in shades you have the more lively it will look.Make sure all your pencil marks go in the same direction.Oh~ and another thing: try not to touch the paper with your palm as it will give an untidy impression.
