Description Yep, seen as I've been getting into Ren and Stimpy (the old show, not the...... thing that came out in 2003... I've read enough info about the show to know that it would psychologically scar me MORE than Breadwinners, Sanjay and Craig, Uncle Grandpa and Are You Happy Now combined, so I won't be subjecting myself to watching any episodes.... I have been unfortunate enough to read about the show and saw one or two screenshots, but I won't be watching any episodes of the Adult Party Cartoon - so my sanity is safe ), I thought that it was time that I drew Ren and Stimpy in my art style.

Yep, I think one reason why I like Ren and Stimpy as characters is that they remind me a little bit of Season 1 Squidward and Patrick - Ren showing Squidward's curmudgeonly, arrogant but still funny nature, and Stimpy showing Patrick's charming stupidity.

Even though I never really watched the show as a child, seen as I watched Earthworm Jim and Billy and Mandy growing up, the show's strange humour is ideal for me - seeming to be inspired by old Tex Avery cartoons and classic animations from... say, the 1950s - the first episode to be aired 'Stimpy's Big Day/The Big Shot' really feels like that.

Even if it's not my #1 favourite cartoon of all time, and whether you like it or not, you have to admit, it really helped to inspire the humour and feel and many other cartoons that came out later, and even cartoons today, at least in my opinion, seem to be influenced by it. This works positively (Rocko's Modern Life, early SpongeBob, Adventure Time, Regular Show and some other popular cartoons, at least to me, seem to have been inspired by the show), and.... negatively (seen as the later seasons used a lot of gross-out humour, and due to the crazy random nonsense of the show, shows like Sanjay and Craig, Uncle Grandpa, NEW SpongeBob, Fanboy and Chum Chum and Breadwinners show signs, at least for me, that they've been trying to base themselves off Ren and Stimpy's randomness and toilet humour - without the writing to back it up.... Ren and Stimpy has a PLOT going on behind it's randomness... The shows I mentioned just now seem to be throwing in disgusting jokes and sugar-high antics without realising how to make them funny.... And yes, new SpongeBob episodes like The Splinter, House Fancy, Pet or Pests and any others with a lot of gross out may have been made by the writers saying 'Hey, it worked for Ren and Stimpy, why don't WE do it?!' without putting any thought into it....) So... kind of a mixed blessing.

And I have a bit of a theory regarding the downfall of the show in the mid 1990s.... John Kricfalusi, the creator of the show, was fired by Nickelodeon over an episode named Man's Best Friend, which I recently uploaded a 1001 Animations page for.... Over a scene where Ren went crazy, as usual, and beat up a guy with an oar..... I watched that scene, and.... I don't get it.... It wasn't anything shocking, as least for me, it was cartoonish and over the top, sure, but no blood or gore was shown....
It's like that scene in the episode 'Sven Hoek' of Ren talking about gouging Sven and Stimpy's eyes out being cut... even though the bits with him fantasising about tearing their arms from their sockets, peeing on the electric fence and him thinking about hitting them and laughing at them stayed in....

So... Nickelodeon was sensitive about THOSE kinds of scenes back then, but NOW they're letting toenails being ripped off (House Fancy), infected splinters (The Splinter), suicide portrayals (One Coarse Meal and Are You Happy Now), Patrick chasing down Gary with a flamethrower (Pet Sitter Pat), a boy having a fart pregnancy (Fart Baby), squid baby fetish porn (Squid Baby), stank breath close ups (Stank Breath), hideous monsters attacking innocent pets (A Pal For Gary) and implied (no - STATED) pedophilia (Love Loaf) being kept in their programs?!
HYPOCRITES... If they didn't fire John K, then the show wouldn't have degraded in quality from what I've heard (I still found Ren's Retirement, A Yard Too Far, Bass Masters, Insomniac Ren, Circus Midgets and Stimpy's Cartoon Show to be pretty good - episodes made AFTER John K's dismissal), and we may not have had the Adult Party Cartoon thrown at us, as John K would have no doubt kept the show going...... What I'm trying to say is that I'm 99.9 repeating percent sure that if they hadn't fired John K. over that oar scene, being a bit too sensitive (seriously, it still surprises me that THAT scene of all things was what doomed John K's career with Nickelodeon), then Ren and Stimpy probably would have lasted longer, and quite possibly, the Adult Party Cartoon wouldn't have happened....

Nice one, Nickelodeon.....

But luckily, I found a website where I've been watching episodes from the first two seasons in particular, and I'm recording the newer ones on my Sky box.

So, enjoy the artwork! Hopefully, more episodes of Ren and Stimpy will be put on 1001 Animations pages, as I've been enjoying them a lot.

Yeah, I agree. It had no blood and guts, no swearing, no sex, no drugs, and no nudity. Although there was one episode I thought was sort of sketchy with the "Rubber Nipples" thing, and the Stimpy Fan Club had a scene of Ren wanting to kill himself (which wasn't funny at all), but I didn't think it was that bad. I'd let my kids watch it too.

And yes, the Oar Beating scene controversy was overreacting. Just like how they Overreacted at Squidward being torched by the Krusty Krab Security Device in that one episode (which by the way, was a scene deleted from that episode afterwards, but they didn't delete scenes like the Toenail scene).

Thank you for your comment.

As for Stimpy's Fan Club, here's my personal opinion on it - even though that scene of Ren overreacting and wanting Stimpy to... er, 'stab' him (but it was a rubber dagger, so I doubt any real stabbing would take place) didn't bother me that much (in my opinion, it was a suicide gag that WORKED because it was obvious a RUBBER DAGGER wouldn't do anything ), I think the true controversy was Ren contemplating strangling Stimpy - but once again, that didn't bother me that much. Simply because there was a reasonable catalyst to Ren's actions that I could sympathise with - he was jealous of everyone loving Stimpy and leaving Ren unloved - and plus, just before he had a chance to do the deed, he snapped himself out of it - he was able to stop himself.
Sorry for the huge explanation, it was just that I wanted to explain why I'm not as angry towards those scenes as everyone else was. But... yeah, Rubber Nipple Salesman was... odd. The only Ren and Stimpy episodes I wouldn't let my children would be the few I've done atrocity pages on - but luckily, those are VERY rare.

I know right? Ren slapped Stimpy comedicly TONS of times earlier in other episodes - so how is an over-the-top oar beating any worse?

Also, I was just watching some reruns and I found two other suicide jokes in them. One, I think was done right, the other, I'm not so sure.

The first one was from the Episode "Ren Needs Help" (not to be confused with Ren Seeks Help, which is totally horrifying).
In this one scene of Ren Needs Help, which happens at the beginning, Stimpy's tomfoolery results in the destruction of Ren's favorite glass table, and his Moose Chair being scratched up. Stimpy tries to apologize and says he will fix it. Ren at first looks like he's going to kick Stimpy's butt for it, then he grins and says "Excuse Me, I have to go End It All." Ren then proceeds to turn on the Garbage Disposal in the Sink, and jump head-first into it as a suicide attempt, and is only stopped by Stimpy calling the local Asylum and having him sent there.

That Suicide Joke I don't think was done well. It was about on par with One Coarse Meal if you ask me, and was not very funny.

The other one one, I forgot the name of the episode, but it was about Ren and Stimpy staying the night at a Haunted House, and a small ghost there tries to spook them, but every time he tries to scare them though, he fails epically.
After the last failure, The Ghost thinks that he doesn't deserve to live and tries to kill himself (which at first doesn't make sense because he's already dead, since he's a ghost). Ren and Stimpy finally acknowledge his existence as he tries to hang himself, but then Stimpy says not to do that, but Use A Frikkin Bottle Of Poison instead.
The Ghost actually then does it and then dies, but apparently him dying as a Ghost causes him to come back to life as a chipper fat man. The Ghost, now as a living person now after killing himself as a ghost, then walks out of the house and goes to enjoy his life again.

Well, I think this one was done right, although seeing the Ghost drink poison was rather cringe-worthy, since it was a ghost (who is already dead), and having him return to life after that sort of made it good. I think that was a suicide joke done right.

I thought the scene where he was going to then murder Stimpy was at first interesting (I liked the part where he was like "AND WITH THESE HANDS, I HOLD THE FATE OF MILLIONS" for Ren's appearance there reminded me of Andross from Star Fox for some reason).
I wouldn't of liked it if he actually did the deed, he looked more like he was going to snap his neck instead of just strangle him, but the way he stopped himself was rather humorous ("GAH! MY BRAIN! MY HOT, STINGING, BRAIN!!!!)

I haven't seen what you've written Animated Atrocities pages on, but I'll check them out when I can.

And yes, the Adult Party version of Ren And Stimpy was terrible, even for non-censored standards.

Well - of course him DOING the deed would have been WAY out of order - but luckily, he was brought back into his senses. 'My hot... STINGING... BRAAAAAAIN!' ) And plus, it made the emotional moment when Stimpy wrote a fan letter for Ren to cheer him up even more heartwarming.

Okay. Hair of the Cat, Ren's Brain, Ren's Toothache and Magical Golden Singing Cheeses are the atrocity pages.

..............Well said.

That's one of the funniest songs I've ever heard in a cartoon, next to "Yodel-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo".

"I don't think you're happy enough. That's right! I'll teach you to be happy! I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs!"

"If'n you ain't the granddaddy of all liars! Mmm, the little critters of nature. They don't know they're ugly. That's very funny. A fly marrying a bumblebee. I told ya' I'd shoot! But you didn't believe me! WHY DIDN'T YOU BELIEVE ME!?"
