These are so original and fun. I feel very peaceful looking at them. Is that weird?

weird? I don't know, but I take it as a mighty compliment. I don't like death-dealing destructive robots. When I draw them I think of them as being utterly benign so I'm glad you think so

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. Usually, (actually 99.9% of the time) robots are portrayed as massive beasts of destruction, while yours remind me of when I was a kid, (a long time ago) when robots were still fresh and a source of wonderment for me.

You used to be an IADT student right?
I'm in animation myself, final year.

Which year were you in, I might have seen you about the place.

Oh yeah, I'm one of DLIADT's most illustrious alumni I finished in 2007. Short and dreadlocked of hair.
Good luck with your final project. Have you started it yet?

Yup, the pre production booklet is due next week,
Its about an actor who goes through a bit of a self worth crisis mid performance,
the performance he gives is a bit lacklustre and insincere until he sees an empty chair in the centre of the theatre.

The fake him kind of fades away when he cant stop focusing on the empty chair and he gives a genuine performance which earns him an applause for actually baring himself emotionally...blah blah etc.

I adore that one with the gun on the shoulder! These must be quite big if the white is charcoal - I'm in awe that the edges are so neat but the watercolour is so deliciously blotchy.

Duffzilla In reply to Mollinda [2011-10-24 17:49:43 +0000 UTC]

Who says it's a gun?! hmm? maybe it's a.....something else :/
Anyway, they're not that big really; none longer than 20cm. The white charcoal is like a pastel pencil so it can be sharpened to a point. Or fairly pointy... such as like what this here is [link]
and the neatness is easy. You just paint the shape once and then drop in other colours while it's wet, instead of adding more strokes.

I have attempted this method in the past and... well. The edges weren't nearly as neat! It's a gorgeous effect though I must try again.

I hadn't thought about using a pastel pencil to add white on top of watercolour - which is madness considering I teach art and use white conte on top of everything. Sometimes the dots, they do not connect in my head...

Yeah, it's become my M.O. to figure out a way to do something that people like and then immediately run away from it and do something else.
I'll just say I'm done with these for now.
