Hehehe, I don't know their use either, since I don't make "realistic" spaceships. I have nothing to base my designs on since these don't actually exist, so I just add random things most of the time. Those spikes seemed like a good idea at the time but eventually I didn't wanna work on it anymore, that's why they stayed white like that. I might go back and change that one day.

Ship looks pretty good.
Am working on a big ship too but it probably won't have that much surface detail. Always had problems coming up with ideas for the extra details. Have no problems with the required stuff like guns, sensor pods, etc.
How do you get the ideas for the extra details?

Well, this ship's supposed to look large...like it can hold a lot of people and smaller ships, so to show that it can do that, I needed at least one exit for some smaller fighters to exit and lots of lights to simulate window lights from people's rooms. To give the walls of the ship some metallic look I made some metallic textures, obviousely , but I also cut shapes into some surfaces then extruded/bevelled them to add small details.
Most parts of this ship are just modified cubes and other parts I actually drew with splines then extruded them to create tiles or other metal parts. I also used the Array feature in Max to save some time and add details like on the middle area, the top of the front area, and the window parts. Using the same shapes a lot of times works pretty well for high poly spaceships. I went with a symmetrical, squarey look on this one, but obviousely there are other methods for more organic-looking ships. Oh and the lights are just spheres I manually placed in front of windows, so they seem more random. If I add a glow effect to them later, they'll look just like lights instead of low poly spheres, which is a nice effect when you see a large ship.
Other than that, I'm mainly making stuff up as I go along, since I don't generally make high poly ships. I guess I generally go with the concept of making large ships have a lot of metal plates instead of huge smooth areas with no details. (like when I texture them, except now I'm using geometry)
