Might I suggest using darker lines behind the character's head and tail, and/or shadowing them more darkly? Otherwise the head and arm fade into the white background; in the smaller size, they're almost invisible.
(I had a lot of trouble with contrast too, and had to learn about contrast and focus from several teachers.)
