Description
The ghost village of Doel (part 3).
I arrived by car following the Oostlangeweg, with the intention of turning right into the Engelsesteenweg, which leads to the ghost village of Doel. However, to my surprise, I was stopped by a barrier that only opened if I put my ID card into a card reader. It also turned out that it was permitted to drive in the village but not to park there. It was also forbidden to park right in front of the barriers. It was obvious that tourists were not welcome in the village and were hardly tolerated. So I drove one or two kilometres by car, found an authorized parking lot and came on foot. In retrospect, I'm really glad it was like that. Indeed, it allowed me to experience a kind of initiatory pilgrimage to the land of ghosts. And in my opinion, the most interesting abandoned houses are not those in the village itself, but the independent middle-class houses along the Engelsesteenweg. Had I entered the village by car, I would probably have neglected them.
