They look different to me. Maybe it's because the rifles in operation as so different.

The M14 is a garand with a box mag, selector switch, and a new barrel shroud. They are the same in operation, as in they took a garand, gave it a slightly newer bullet, and a box mag.

I knew the M14 was based off of the M1, but I didn't realize they were so alike.
