Description Never posted any photos of the wax and wanted to share.

I lost count of the hours it took to carve this. Was tedious but fun. All started from a solid block of wax. He was carved with rotary carvers, picks, and a wax pen. Citrine eyes. I didn't carve him on the pen as the pen is sterling and 14k. I carved an exact replica of the pen in wood and carved it on there; only slipping it into place on the pen to check snugness.

Finished piece!

this looks fitted now, how did you deal with metal shrink?

I carved a piece of wood to the shape of the pen. I took into consideration that it would shrink a bit, when I cast it i ground the interior smooth until it fit onto the pen without forcing it. Didn't want to scratch the pen.

Rotary carvers?

Stupid question, perhaps, but how do you avoid the wax getting hot and clogging the carver?

The detail on this is stunning...

Thanks.

Speed control is everything. I have a foot pedal that I can go ultra fast or ultimately slow. If you go too fast too long it will heat up and goo up. You can have quick bursts without worry of melting though. If it melts just wait for it to cool and pick the wax off the burr. I only ever do this when hogging down the basic shape. I go really fast and if I'm punching out a ring hole I might goo up occassionaly.

Also the wax I use is meant for carving. There are different grades. I use and ultra hard high temprature wax.

Ferris or Matt blue wax. 1lbs blocks.

Your works are such a delight! So many details, such precision... it's always interesting to see the wax model and compare it to the final design. Did you hollow out the body or left it solid? It's not worn on the body, but still seems a little heavy...
