I took a photo of these flowers a couple of years ago. They had come up in a friend's (overgrown) garden and he had no idea what they were. We did quite a lot of research before we identified them and now you've confirmed that we were correct They're strange little flowers, the dark ones seem like they're chequered.

The dark ones are also known as Snake's Head Fritillaries, as the chequered pattern looks like scales.
