Description Hello all! I've got 's OC Shadow Veil/Zanon for ya' today, based on 's original here: fav.me/d7gvhen

I'm not sure if I'm quite satisfied yet, but I'm much happier with this cut than the one that came before (oh man, that one was ugly! haha ^_^)

I've started cheating, using black Sharpie for the pupils to get the deep-dark black that I just can't coax out of the wood. Hey don't judge, it worked

Um... stupid question... what is it made of? It looks like wood, but I'm also getting a kind of leather/hide vibe from it.

Not stupid at all, thanks for asking! I was surprised as well just how leather-y it looks, but it is indeed made of wood.  (Baltic birch plywood to be exact!)

I'd love to work with leather, but the laser cutter is incompatible with synthetic leathers (and I don't want to use real leather) D:  It seems that most of the synthetic stuff is vinyl or PVC, and the toxic fumes released in the burning process bother the other people in the building for some reason haha (not to mention the fumes damage the laser cutter heh)

I'm surprised you were able to get such a variety of color with simple plywood. Did you use stains, or were you able to accomplish it some other way?

Also, here is how you get over using real leather. The animal is already dead and they already made the leather, so if you don't use it, then it died for nothing. So why not turn its sacrifice into something beautiful instead of letting it go to waste.

Nope, no stains! The plywood has a limited range of shades one can get when laser etching.  The lightest is of course the un-burned areas, like the eyes, and the darkest is the the area surrounding the cutie mark.  I just have to be mindful of the reduced contrast when etching an image.

As for the leather, I do have two 8.5 by 11 inch sheets lying around, but it smells pretty bad when burnt haha XD  Wood's more pleasant smelling, so I think it'll remain my medium of choice for a while.  Not to mention that I still have so much to learn, and wood's supposedly the "easiest" medium to work with >_>  Thank you for the encouragement!

Well wood is definitely easier, but it all really depends on what you try to do with it. Anyway, keep up the good work.

It looks like you got a bit of different depth on this one. Especially at the bottom of the wings. Is that really a different depth or are my eyes deceiving me? If so, how'd you do it? lol

Yes! Anywhere the laser lingers, more of the material is removed.  Sometimes this is done intentionally, as was the case for the plaques I did last month (fav.me/d7qdfy1 ), where the print driver interprets the value of black in the image as a depth value. Other times, it's just a natural byproduct of etching a dark area next to a lighter one ^_^ Most of the time it turns out alright!

And I remember that piece you did last month too. Guess this one just looked a little different to me.
