Description Janice Starlin: The Wasp Woman

Now that we move from one of Corman’s most famous monsters…..let us move to one of Corman’s most infamous monsters huh? This is Janice Starlin. Also known as the movie’s title. “The Wasp Woman.

Like Jekyll and Hyde, The Hideous Sun Demon, The Wolfman, and many many others!, the Wasp Woman was your typical human transforming monster that was plagued by an unwise decision made on their part. Hers was the fact that she allowed her utter fright of human aging get the best of her. She decided to allow herself to be inject with un-fully tested serum that was derived from royal jelly of a Queen Wasp. Throughout the film she transforms back and forth between her now beautiful female form…and that of a wasp like humanoid creature with a thirst for blood.

It is a pretty straight forward script with really only one good character at all. That character would be Janice Starlin. You actually feel very sorry for her earlier in the film. She is just a person that finally had the world state it to her that she is too old to model. And she is so vain and egotistical that she is not willing to relinquish her role as being the model face of her own cosmetics company. The woman is so desperate that she is willing to sink to the depths of remolding genetics. She get’s hooked on the stuff and ends up becoming more of a monster than she was before. True it was her own fault, but there is a smidgen of pity there I guess if you are a female viewer.

The plot is so translatable to audiences that it was used again in the 90’s HBO remake of The Wasp Woman, and 2004’s disastrous film Catwoman. Catwoman huh………..On second thought, maybe the plot wasn’t so good Jokes aside I do like this film. It never got featured on MST3K (which is weird to be honest). But it was featured on Cinematic Titanic. That is a show that features many of the original cast members from Mystery Science Theater 3000.

As for the illustration I did itself, I was forced to change a lot of things. In the film she wears this black leotard and most of the costume is black is well. This would not work all that great for the colorful style that I wanted this piece to carry over to the viewer. I had to dress her up in a sun meadow dress and magenta shirt. I changed the skin to a darker blue and tried to make sure she kept a very curvy woman’s figure. On a side note I added a necklace pendant to her with the initials of “RC”…..Roger Corman

I think the vision of the Wasp Woman on the poster was a much more interesting idea than what we actually got.

Yeah, sort of reminds me of the Roger Corman remake they did in the 90's.

I like how your alterations actually made her into more wasp-like monster than she was in the original film. Also, just to clear things up, the remake aired on Showtime, not HBO. link

Thankx. I know that original suit mask, it just looks like a messed up gargoyle thing. I tried to smooth it out as best as I could. I remember when they redid a lot of those Roger Corman things Showtime did. They also redid Humanoids from the Deep and Attack of the 50 foot woman and something else.

Thankx I am a very colorful dummy .....That is I just like to use a ton of bright colors with ultra simple line-work and clean shading haha. I really enjoyed doing that giant Gypsy and Tom Servo pieces.

Currently I am working on a Cambot one right now ^_^. The theme for that one is going to be a bunch of one eyed robots, monsters, and aliens

Cinematic Titanic. I really want to see it. But hey, at least I have Rifftrax

Yeah the poster is very deceiving. I have seen most of the Cinematic Titanic episode before. It was on Youtube but since then has been taken off. It's pretty good if you ever get a chance to see it. TV's Frank is actually pretty good on commentary

Well, Frank is a really funny man IMO. I remember seeing a comedy skit he did and he mentioned that in the review, he joked about making a Count Chocula film where he gives teen girls type-2 diabetes when he bites them or something like that

This is really amazing and terrifying at the same time! Good job on this illustration.

To be honest I've never heard of the wasp-woman before, so thanks to your description I guess I learned something new, haha!

It's not a bad movie. Worth a watch. No different than other humans transforming into monster stuff.
