this picture doesn't deny the existence of it. it's a disgruntled bear on small ice. he's melting. he knows he's fucked and he's damned pissed. this bear is simply saying, what he says.

all the evidence i read is that a few bears in canada drowned after a strong storm- you know, the kind that always happen in rough northern waters- and that it was used as an emotional hitch to get people riled up about global warming. when really, out of the 13 distinct populations of bears in canada, 11 of those are either very stable or increasing in numbers. sounds like extinction to me. On average, 15 bears a year die by drowning. The planet has a good sized population of over 25,000 bears. Even more, those two populations that aren't doing so well in Canada, that area is in a cooling trend. Areas that are experiencing temperature rises have had population bursts in Polar Bear populations. So when 15 bears dies every year from drowning, and 50 die from illegal hunting, tell me what's really threatening them. In the 60's, there were less than 5,000 bears remaining on Earth. Since then, the population has exploded by over 500%. That seems to be a lot to me.
If you're looking for evidence, for the love of God, do not turn to the news.
Editors make money when people buy their newspaper or watch their program. And who wants to hear that things are just fine? Nobody. Keep people worried, keep their attention.
Read some reports from some honest scientists.
You won't find those facts I just posted in the news anywhere. Because it suggests stability. All people want to hear is that humanity is raping the earth, they want to feel sorry for themselves and they want to blame each other.
God forbid anything is stable.

i really like the style, honestly,
but mister polar bear hasn't felt anything from global warming -.-
i would really like some hardcore evidence that warming is threatening them with extinction.

for now. it's winter there now, so the cubs born a few months ago are doing quite well. there's really no breeding season for the bears, so for now they stand a good chance along with refreezing of ice caps.

The picture that you got this idea from has been totally misrepresented. It was of two polar bears on what looks like a melting glacier, a little ice floe that has split away, and they are supposedly stranded. That picture was taken back in 2004, and the caption for the original picture talks about how these polar bears, a mother and her cub, are playing around on an ice sculpture created by waves. An ice sculpture created by waves, a phenomenon that occurs when you have real cold water and cold air in the north like at the Arctic Circle. Now, nobody can tell me that waves are part of global warming, because waves have been in the ocean ever since there's been the ocean. So global warming had no impact whatsoever on where those polar bears were.
They chose to be there. They swam out there, swam up on the ice floe. They can swim hundreds of miles, on top of the water, the surface, underneath. The whole thing was a fraud, and it is a great little microcosm for the entire global warming escapade. Check these links out if you don't believe ...

If you all like an inconvenient truth, you should look into what was really behind the photograph that inspired this piece. Go ahead, seek the truth, it will shock you. As far as 'An Inconvenient Truth' it seems that most of you are too young to remember the days when 'scientists' were warning of a new ice age. Gee, that didn't happen! Now there is a 'consensus', not science, that if we don't do 'something' it's going to start to get hot in here. If it does, I say let's take off all our clothes!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EatToast In reply to MasterOfPointillism [2007-02-24 21:31:52 +0000 UTC]

actually, in order to have an ice age, sea level needs to rise, and doing so by the increasing amount of glaciers like antartica and greenland melting is enough to mess up the large warm water currents enough to make an ice age within a few decades. no offense, i know i'm young, but i'm also a biology scholar, so i do know what i'm talking about.
