"OOF! OW! GODDAMIT! What the-? Neji??!!!!" Naruto cried out shocked at the sight of the older boy.
Neji was laying on the ground, curled up in the fetal position. Silent tears poured from his eyes as he mouthed the same thing over and over again.
"Neji? Whats wrong? Whats going on? Are you okay? Speak to me, come on!" Naruto shouted, frustrated. He leaned down to see what it was that Neji was mouthing.
"....I......n't....nooo..." He moaned.
Naruto was confused. What the hell was he saying? It made no sense. Suddenly he felt a shift in the air. Someone was approaching him from the back. He turned quickly, his eyes locking on to the solitary figure approaching. It was a woman. She was shorter than him by about an inch. She was ghostly pale, and had short brown hair. She was framiliar to him somehow, but he couldn't place exactly how.She also was smiling.
Naruto opened his mouth to warn her to stay back, but no words would come out. He tried again, but the words seemed lodged in his throat.
Then quietly she spoke, her voice soft as velvet. "Hello, baby. I'm so glad to see you. Did you miss me? I missed you. Look at you, you're all grown up now aren't you..."
Finally, Naruto found his voice. "Get away!" He rasped. "I don't know who you are but if you come any closer I'll kill you."
"Now, now, don't be like that. I just want to see you up close. What's the matter Naruto? Don't you recognize me? Its me, mommy. Can you really have forgotten me?"
At her words Naruto gave a strangled cry and crumpled to his knees. He couldn't believe it. It couldn't be true.
"My mother died the day I was born. She wouldn't know me today if we stood on the same chair under a spotlight," he quavered.
"Heh heh heh," The woman laughed. "Not that mommy silly. The mommy who raised you. Come now think harder you know me...."She purred.
There was a rushing sound in Naruto's ears. He couldn't see, couldn't hear, couldn't breath. This woman couldn't be his mother, and yet..."No," He screamed in fury, using the last of his strength to hurl a kunai at her. Luck was with him it seemed because it hit his intended target right in the stomach.
The woman gave a scream of pure fury, suddenly her eyes were glowing red.
"You filthy little monster! I took care of you and this is how you repay me! You little bastard! Its your fault I'm dead, I had to get you that stupid little book! You filthy little-" Naruto blindly whipped a shuriken at her. It hit her right in the face. With another earsplitting shriek she faded away. Faded into the night.
His enemy was gone, but it was too late. The damage was done. The moment she had appeared, Naruto's two personalities had, for a short time, blended together into one again. Naruto was conscious of everything, and nothing. He knew he had two personalities now, but he still didn't know why, the memory was there, but he couldn't grasp it. He was scared and sick and he was...a monster.
He was again two personalities. The real Naruto was, for now, in control. Not that it mattered, the result would have been the same no matter which one was dominant at the end of the encounter.
Already on his knees, Naruto slouched forward, his hands cupping his face as he muttered to himself.
"My, my fault, all my fault..." He was oblivious to the outside world, trapped in an unseen horror in his own mind. Tears poured down his face as he rocked back and forth chanting to himself. Neji, barely six inches behind him remained curled up, silent tears still coursing down his face as he mouthed his little mantra. If Naruto had been conscious of this world he would have figured out what Neji was murmering to himself. As it was, both boys were locked in their own minds unable to fight the monsters inside thier heads. Both lay rocking and crying , chanting long after the sun rose.
That was exactly how they're teammates found them the next day.

"Oh My God, Naruto, Neji?" Sakura called as she rushed up to the two boys hunched in the sand. "What are you doing here?" She started but froze. Something was wrong, neither boy was moving. Both were awake it seemed.
Naruto was hunched on his knees, Neji was curled up behind him. Both were staring ahead unblinking, their eyes bloodshot and swollen. Both were mouthing silently, completely unaware of her approach. Oh yeah, something was waaaaay wrong.
"Naruto? Neji?" She asked carefully. No response.
What the hell? She thought panic lacing her voice now she called louder, "NARUTO! NEJI! This isn't funny! Whats wrong!"
By this time the others had arrived and were staring agape at the sight before them. Then Kakashi took charge.
"Sakura check their vitals. They've been attacked. It may have been genjutsu. I don't know yet. Lee, Choji, and Shikamaru, search your bags for materials to make stretchers. We're going to have to take them to suna, its closer. Ino, Ten-Ten, back track now and find Sasuke and Hinata. If they've been attacked too bring them here. I don't think they were but just go check. If they're okay then get back here a.s.a.p. but do not split up! GO! Shino, can you use your bugs to search the surrounding area?"
Shino nodded.
"Good, then do it. And Kiba you and Akamaru sniff around for any unusual smells. Hurry up all of you. We have to get to sand tonight. It isn't safe to stay in the desert another night."
Sakura got to work examining the boys. Their vitals were all normal, or at least not life threatening...for now. What was it they were mouthing? She leaned closer to Naruto and just made out the words.
"...so...so sorry..my fault...all my..." She pulled back disgusted, Whoever had done this had convinced Naruto it was his fault.
Next she checked Neji. "...didn't...please...listen...dn't tell..." Once again she pulled back. What could Neji think he had done? He was probably one of the best friends Naruto had ever had. He wouldn't have hurt him...
She looked at Kakashi. "I can't find anything physically wrong," She began, "but they show signs of severe psychological shock."
"I see." Turning he called out, "are those stretchers ready yet?"
"Yes sir!" was the sharp reply he recieved from Lee.
"Kakash sensei," Shino said quietly. "I have found no traces of another living being within the next five miles in any direction."
"I didn't think you would," Kakashi sighed. Just then he heard Akamaru whine and Kiba gag. “What is it?” He called as he rushed over.
“Oh yuck. Something was here and it was no genjutsu thats for sure. It smells disgusting, like rotting flesh and smoke.” Kiba whined clutching his nose in agony. Akamaru was pawing at his own nose in what looked like an attempt to get it off his face.
Just then Ino and Ten-Ten came dashing up, followed by a panting Sasuke with a very red Hinata on his back.
“Ino filled us in so far, but what have you learned.” Sasuke gaspedletting Hinata slide to the ground.
Kakasi brought the group up to date. “We have to get to sand quickly. Hinata have Sakura look at your ankle. Before it wasn’t so urgent for us to reach our destination, now we have to go without stopping till we get there and you need to be able to run quickly.”
Hinata did as she was bid and the boys were on the stretcher in minutes. At Kakashi’s signal they took off toward suna. They traveled without rest for nearly eighteen hours. At the entrance to the village they met Kankuro.
“Holy shi- what the hell happened to you guys?”
“Kankuro, please, we need rest and medical attention for these two can you just help us?” Sakura pleaded exhaustedly.
Without another word he called a team of medics to take Naruto and Neji to the hospital. Gaara and Temari arrived shortly after that and escorted the teen to bedrooms. In Gaara’s office Kakashi quickly gave a run down of what had occured.
Gaara looked shocked and a flash of familiarity came into his eyes for a second.
“Go rest, I have some theories I need to check. We’ll all meet here after you have caught up on your sleep. Temari, Kankuro go with him. I don’t want to be disturbed. He ushered them out and slammed the door. Reaching into a secret cubby he pulled out a sacred scroll to see if it had been opened recently. He looked at the seal.
It was broken.
“Damn,” he cursed under his breath, knowing he had a lot of research, explaining, and punishing to do. Noone touched his scrolls without permission. Noone.
