Description I had been hoping to finish this today, I've been working on the model over the course of the week. However, the texture map for the radio is messed up really bad and I am not sure how I can fix it just yet. It's either caused by an issue with the mesh itself or with the UV mapping.

But I really like how the model turned out even without most of its textures, so I decided to put up a WIP so that you guys can check it out. If anyone has a good UV mapping tutorial for Maya, let me know!

Most 3d software supports to use a background image in your UV editor (in that case the finished texture) so you can place your UV shells exactly over it again.Β

For tutorials I would recommend Pluralsight in general, I learned more there than during the time I studied that stuff in college.Β

So it'd be inserting the image first and then adjusting it from there?

I'll take a look at the site. Thank you.

In the UV editor: If you have a finished texture like f.e. a diffuse/albedo map, you can use it as a template to place your UV shells on top of that so that you do not have to redo your textures and only the UV maps. Not sure if I can explain that good. I am pretty sure that Maya supports that feature. Found some example:Β

Hm, that sounds really useful for later projects. I will definitely try that out! Thank you!

Unfortunately, I don't think that'd solve this problem. With this model, it appears to assume that the faces for the front of the radio are edges on the UV map. I've tried changing the Unfold and Layout settings and moving the edges to see if it is just interpreting the space as a single pixel wide, but nothing seems to work. I can't apply any textures to it at all.

Wish I could help you more, but I never bothered to learn Maya for modelling and prefer 3dsMax, but from what you describe, UV mapping seems to be aweful in Maya. In Max I would just define the edges on the backside as my peel seams and be done with the beast in mere seconds or would probably use a more planar approach. However for a model like this I would start out with a box and before I do anything else, I would unwrap that and then reshape it, so that I already have all needed seams and just relax the UV shells when done.Β

No, it’s okay. Your idea for the textures being done before I work on the model is helpful.

I’ll see if I can try the box method.
