Can you please tell me how you trained him to do that? I already stormed up an idea when I read the artist's comments--take a small treat and point in it one direction, wait until he looks, and say "right", "left", "up" etc. depending on which way you have him look, and then give him the treat, but I could be wrong. :/

Okay, what you do is you train him to do "Hand Targeting". When you are just beginning, you hold out your hand with a treat tucked between your thumb and pointer finger and tell your dog "Touch". You continue to work on the command until the dog knows "Touch" means come and touch your palm.

Once the dog understands that, you being working with sticky notes. Place a sticky note on your palm and say something like "Watch" or "Look". The sticky note grabs the dogs attention and when they look at your hand, give them a treat with the opposite hand.

Finally, once your dog understands the "Watch" or "Look" command, you can add distance to the command. Begin working at two feet then five and so on until the dog always looks at the hand.

So after all that training, you can add another command and say something like "Look over there". You have the dog on a leash and throw a treat in the direction you want the dog to look and point your finger towards the treat. Repeat until the dog looks in any direction with or without treats, I don't use treats because Axel will get distracted, but it is up to you.

Eventually, your dog should be able to do all these commands off leash, in any situation. Hope I helped, if you want any more help or more in depth training techniques, feel free to ask me.

It really does depend on the dog. Axel is crazy smart, it's almost scary, but sometimes it also depends on the dog. Whatever training method you dog does best with, you could try to adapt my technique into another method your dog understands.

I find that the way I showed you is the fastest, most effective way to train them the commands, but some dogs might be to tempted to just chase the treats or ignore the hand signs.

I wish you good luck with the training. It may take a long time, but it's definitely worth it in the end.

My Husky, Nikki, is somewhat scary smart haha. Her blue eyes are just... intense. I hope these tutorials help because all my friends want to see amazing pictures of her.

I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully you two will have fun training together, like I do with Axel. And your lucky, I wish Axel had blue eyes like his sister! I'm jealous!
