Tabia is the eldest of Mizizi’s litter by a diplomat that had actually been quite rude to Bhekabantu and told never to come back… his coat was slightly darker then normal and his pride had been close to the Dark Jungles, which had made everyone quite nervous about his blood. However, the four cubs produced are all girls and all very beautiful indeed, Dogo was thought to be the most beautiful but there was something striking in Tabia’s countenance, something lady-like. With her unusual habits of being a fussy cleaner, Mizizi names her daughter for her lady-like manners and encourages Tabia to hang around with Sarabi and make sure she was considered a great hunter. Of course the young lioness learnt quite well that being the eldest meant she could control a hunting party and if she was a close friend to the next queen, she would be the secondary leader of the hunt! It was an important that position that meant if something happened to the queen, Tabia would be next and in general it meant she could be a concubine to a king rather then just some wandering prince/ diplomat!
But it was obvious to Tabia, though she tried to make friends with Sarabi all the time, which her cousin did not look at her family the same way she was supposed to. In fact Sarabi looked outward towards dangerous lands and when talking to her elder cousin Chando, Tabia learnt that Sarabi could choose a mate for her cousins if necessary for alliances. Tabia was startled and excited at the thought of being sent to marry a prince and she went to her uncle, asking him over the situation but being told that he had no want to assign a mate to any of them after Wimbo’s arranged marriage. Tabia was quite steamed and would have decided to have a fuss, if Sarabi’s father had not died and his brother sire a son of Queen Linda. Realising no new male would come to this land, Tabia returned to being friendly with Sarabi again and was eager to agree to leave with them.
Dragging her sisters Mti and Msimu, Tabia told her baby sister Dogo to stay behind until they had found a secure place for her to journey to. In fact Tabia was a good big sister and though from the youngest litter, she was very good at keeping everyone calm in danger and just as eager as Dwala and Naanda to leap out and prepare to fight. When Dwala and Sarabi had the argument that made Sarabi run away for a proper journey on her very own, Tabia insisted that the two fastest members of the group head home to inform their king. They did so and Tabia kept the group in line before their king joined them with Dogo and the group headed toward an old ally in the north, just in case they could help that the king had heard needed new lionesses. On the way they met up with Sarabi and Mufasa and this was when everything changed for Tabia… she was immediately in love with Mufasa and yet it was obvious that he only had eyes for Sarabi!
For years Tabia spent her time encouraging her sisters to hunt with her, they are remarkable hunters and it is not long before queen Uru adds them into what remains of her hunting party and declares that Tabia will be her assistant and therefore the leader of the hunting party. Tabia is honoured and flaunts it at Sarabi, who is just pleased Tabia can have something for herself. She does her best to kill animals that produce great meat for the entire pride and to Mufasa she always gives the best piece. Mufasa is always grateful but it pulls Tabia into the sights of the conniving Nyota who appears to Tabia one evening and tells her she has a ‘secret power’ and can see visions. Tabia is intrigued to hear her thoughts but Dogo is swift to grab her sister’s paw and tell her not to go, only for Nyota to offer her some interesting news too. It is then the sisters go with Nyota to the Elephant’s Graveyard’s Geyser Field where Scar has taken the opportunity to lead the hyenas to hunt in the Pride Lands. Nervous, Mti and Msimu follow Tabia and the four sisters are all suddenly told their fortunes… which scare and excite them. Dogo is the most affected, feeling excited about having a mate that loves her greatly, let alone a wonderful son but when it is Tabia’s turn she is much more nervous. Nyota tells her she will birth a son to Mufasa, but her son will never be a king and Mufasa will never love her.
Tabia is angry at the words of Nyota and when her sisters look startled at what sounds akin to treachery, Tabia attacks Nyota and warns her never to go near Mufasa or Sarabi or any of her sisters again. Tabia cannot accept that she will not get what she wants or the idea that something bad is going to happen with Sarabi. Tabia tries to shrug off Nyota’s silly vision until she is told of Sarabi’s first miscarriage and suddenly Tabia fears that Nyota is some kind of witch and has actually used Tabia’s jealousy to curse her cousin! As time goes on, Tabia tries to strengthen her bond with Sarabi and together they are tighter then ever until it is obvious that Sarafina is Sarabi’s best friend and her choice for head of the hunting party. This irritates Tabia but she refuses to hate Sarabi for it and then Mufasa goes to her.
Tabia is startled by the proposal to produce a child for Sarabi via Mufasa, she is quick to agree and is not bothered by the thought her child would go to Sarabi, but by then she had forgotten Nyota’s words. When Tabia is satisfied with being pregnant she suddenly started to consider if maybe Mufasa would choose her if something bad happened to Sarabi… but then Sarabi is announced pregnant. Tabia produces a son with her sisters around her, save Msimu, and she weeps at the news Sarabi has a son as well. Her sisters try to comfort her but the most unwelcome person to take interest in her cub when she reveals him is Nyota… and suddenly her words seem true.
So Tabia has to do something about it, she begins rumours of Nyota and Scar having an incestuous affair that Mufasa strangely listens to but Tabia is never going to have Mufasa’s love. When he and Simba die, not only does she weep just as greatly as Sarabi, but she realises how much danger Kosey is in and with Nyota’s knowledge she does her best to stop anyone thinking she has the last son of Mufasa.

This is Tabia, one of the many ‘brown’ appearing lionesses in the Lion King movie, however I lightened the colour slightly due to the dulling of Sarabi’s coat in those scenes and she came out more golden – although I think I’ve probably made her under too dark. Also I was having trouble figuring out if they had the coloured light toes or not as from scene to scene they seem different… but I assumed it must be just a darker type of toe colouring or more close to their actual fur type. Anyway, she’s one of my favourite lionesses to write about because of her issues with Sarabi and how she reacts with her little sister Dogo.
