Description
Not long after the first drawing of Alex was finished, I asked the artist for a second one depicting her in more casual clothes. This is the primary Alex reference picture, and the one I pointed and to for their depictions of her.

Anyway, Alex has gone through a good many permutations over her five year history as my character. Her basics have remained mostly unchanged; she's a good and decent person, who believes in doing the right thing and in helping others. Tough, smart and brave, but with a good heart deep down. She's a skilled fighter, capable of defending herself both with and without weapons, but generally preferring to avoid a fight rather than seek one out.

One of the major things about her that I revealed early on was a detail concerning her heritage; her great-great-grandmother was from another world, as well as being a member of said alien world's royal family. That moved her directly into focus for the story, and made her the central player. Another revelation was that she was an orphan; her father was a casualty of war, and her mother had passed away some time before the start of the story. As a result, she lived with her botanist grandmother (who also had the misfortune to die).

By the end of the storyline, however, I'd realized that I'd made some mistakes with her as a character. Basically, she was a Mary Sue; she always saved the day, everyone liked her, and she was special in so many ways. Aside from her alien heritage, I'd altered her part of the way through the storyline to have a sexier new look (consisting mostly of being a little taller and having larger breasts) and telepathic abilities. Adding fuel to the fire was that I established her as being a distant descendent of Zeon Zum Deikun (and thus Char Aznable, the rival from the original Gundam series), having both a long-lost half-sister and a connection to an ancient battle between good and evil (a carryover from a Transformer-related series), and possessing the Power of the Nova (a derivation on the Phoenix Force from Marvel Comics), as well as giving birth to twins seemingly without knowing a male's touch. In a story that was ignored (and probably would've set off a maelstrom of controversy), I established that her pregnancy was due to being raped. Probably not a good plan.

Despite that, however, I still enjoy writing Alex as a character. In 2003, I took Alex and some of her supporting characters and altered them for use in the PokéWars, an interactive fanfiction group based in the Pokémon video games and anime. Alex's story was simplified and shifted, her half-sister was no longer long-lost, and she lost a great deal of the power that she had in the Gundam stories. While I made her younger, I've also painted her as someone who's caught up in things beyond her control, things that she can't fix or fight no matter how hard she tries. As a result, she's a much more fun character.
