Description Over the centuries the ferryman of the river Styx has seen a lot of souls. As the population of the Earth has grown, so have the numbers of people needing passage to Hades. Most of these people no longer have proper fare for passage. To solve both of these issues, he has created an entire flotilla of oar ships to ferry souls across to the underworld, allowing a number of souls to work off the cost of passage by literally becoming part of the craft themselves. These souls are both the materials from which the ferries are made, and the force by which they are powered. Once a soul has worked off the price of passage, they are set free on the shores of Hades, and a new soul is permitted to take their place on the vessel. It is of no concern to Charon that these souls degrade over their term of service to the point where they are little more than bones and sinew by the time that they are set free.

Diggn the macabre! Wow, I love your concept of growth over time. The old'e rickety boat of fairy mans past isn't sufficient. I love the idea of servitude to cross when the rider doesn't have their...2 copper? ( hence while I always keep 2 cents on me) Hades is place, and God. Hel is also a ruler of Hades.

Nice, nice work.
Fantatic concept!

Beautiful piece, i love how you can only see the dim light of the lanterns in the fog to show that the other ships are there. So much detail in the boats too, all the individual skeletons and the subtle outlines of the souls rowing the oars. Gorgeous, and with a great creative description too! But shouldn't it be called passage to the Underworld? Hades may be the god/ruler of the Underworld, but it isn't named after him.

Thanks, I'm glad that you like the picture and description! According to my research, though, the underworld itself is in fact often called "Hades" after the god who rules over it.

Man I love when you submit things. I enjoyed the description that went with this.

The tremendous detail in the boats, the atmosphere all come together in one eerie yet wonderful piece of art!

Thanks! I wish the thumbnail were more interesting. This is one of those pieces that just doesn't shrink down very well.
