I did a small doodle of a few Disney princesses, but I ended up drawing all of them. Mind you, drawing just a few doesn't take much time and effort, but having 13 characters.....
I tried to emulate small parts of the original style. For example, Aurora and Cinderella have narrower and more realistic-sized eyes than, say, Ariel or any of the computer-animated princesses. I think you can see that the Tangled, Brave, and Frozen characters are more "cartoonish" and are more consistent to their reference material (except maybe Merida, only because I just wanted to draw her that way).

Edit: I didn't think I'd have to explain this so much on every social media site, but I am going with the official Disney Princesses list, as defined by the Disney company itself, with my own anticipation that Anna and Elsa will be joining soon because of their well-received film this year. The criteria for making the Disney Princess list is up to Disney; it probably includes a human, female main protagonist of royal or high status, in a feature-length animated musical film without other obstacles such as copyright/money issues (e.g. Giselle's physical likeness to Amy Adams), suggestive clothing, age, etc. For example, I am aware Mulan is not a "Princess", but she is a "Disney Princess"

I know that you may hold some of these other kick-ass, amazing characters near and dear to your heart, but I simply cannot and will not draw them all. Sorry. ♥

Very beautiful work. I especially love Jasmine, Cinderella, Tiana, and Rapunzel. Actually they're all so lovely in their own unique way. I like how you also included the significant symbols from the film with each princess/female lead. I thought that Aurora should've had the spindle but I think the rose was fitting. Yea i kind of wondered about Kida not being included from Atlantis the Lost Empire but I guess her story was not very long-standing with Disney.

Ahhh, so sorry for the delayed response. Thank you so much for commenting! I've always had a bit of a fascination with the Disney Princesses, even though I wasn't too obsessed with princesses when I was little. I briefly considered a spindle for Aurora, but it wasn't as small and pretty as a rose in terms of drawing; I thought that since in many older tales, her name was Rose or Briar Rose, and the thorns around the castle after the spell were of roses, that a rose would be fitting enough. In any case, I certainly grew up hearing the Grimm Fairy Tale versions : )

I think Kida looks very interesting to draw, and certainly a cool character. Pity that Disney did not include her.

Awesome work! You've got a great painting style. I think you did especially well on Aurora and Rapunzel.

//super late response
Thanks so much! Rapunzel was really fun to draw, even though I thought I'd hate drawing the flowers in her hair.

I'm very curious as to how Disney decides who's an "official" princess. For instance, why in Mulan on the list, but not Kida?

Eclipsing In reply to stecky [2014-08-03 07:02:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm a bit curious too! I heard that Kida may not have been an official Disney Princess because Atlantis didn't make as much money, and it wasn't a musical.

stecky In reply to Eclipsing [2014-08-07 06:04:42 +0000 UTC]

Interesting way of determining who's an official princess, though I shouldn't be surprised about the money factor. At the same time, for a company that gets a *lot* of flack for not having enough minority characters, you'd think they'd want to include her

So Disney went from pale skin princesses with light hair and eyes and dipped into ethnic princesses with dark skin and features, then surfaced back to white girls with pale skin, light hair and eyes again.

That seems to be what happened. To be fair, many popular fairy tales seem to be from Europe.

Glad you do! I tend to like to draw collections of characters in chronological order of their appearances. I suppose I could have also done them chronologically in their time periods, but some of them are iffy as to when they occurred. I could probably guess the century based on clothing and events, but it's still a pain... something like Aurora (1400s or 1500s), Snow White (1500s?), Pocahontas (lol 1607 or so because history!), Belle (mid to late 1700s, before the French Revolution), Rapunzel (~1800), Cinderella (1850s?), Elsa & Anna (1800s? Near the same as Rapunzel since Rapunzel shows up in their movie), Tiana (1920s), etc. Some of them are pretty hard to determine because Mulan had some historical elements that didn't take place in the same dynasties, and Ariel.......there were sailors for many centuries, especially during the exploration periods, and poofy sleeves were fashionable a lot. Anyway, everything gives me a headache so I'm glad I went with the order of their movies.

Really wonderful work! Have a great day!

ahhhh scccc00tt  ♥
:') Thank you so much; this comment makes me feel so fuzzy inside. I wouldn't exactly call some of these comments "hatred", but a couple seem to only focus on characters that I excluded, even though I'm only following the official list. It's the same type of comments on other websites haha. They don't bother me too much; I just politely reply with an explanation and move on. I draw to have fun and share, not necessarily to please every viewer.

Everybody forgets Kida from Atlantis.  And I never understood why Mulan is considered a princess.  I mean, Snow White, Aurora, Jasmin, Ariel, Pocahontas, Anna, and Elsa were born princesses.  Belle, Tiana, and Cinderella all married into royalty.  Mulan is a commoner who doesn't get married.

G-A-AnimeFan4 In reply to f14ace [2014-06-22 06:04:18 +0000 UTC]

Technically, Kida wasn't listed as an official Disney Princess, even if many believe she should be.
And Mulan wasn't a 'princess' but held some nobility.

MJDisneyGirl In reply to f14ace [2014-06-22 02:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Eh, IDK, maybe because they just couldn't exclude a good female role model.  Plus, including an Asian woman would be a VERY marketable move for them. Wait, is that racist?

Oh BTW, you forgot Merida, she was born a princess.

Well she is a part of the official line-up, and Pixar is a co-division of Disney.

Eclipsing In reply to f14ace [2014-06-22 01:53:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure exactly why Disney decided to put Mulan in the official list and not various other characters. Perhaps since Mulan was such a popular film and also to add diversity to the group. In any case, I can't just draw every princess from every Disney film because that'd be so many; I'd have to include Eilonwy, Kida, Giselle (maybe; she technically didn't marry the prince in the end; it was Nancy), Melody (include princess offspring?), Leia (now owned by Disney), etc.

Disney has said that a Disney Princess is a main protagonist of royal or high standing in one of their featured films. Apparently Atlantis may have been disqualified because it was not a musical :'0

Its so true everyone does forgets Kida. A lot people thought Elsa was the first Queen, but she wasn't. Kida was lol. I also never understood how Mulan was considered a Princess since Shang wasn't royalty.

Anyway, great drawings Eclipsing

Eclipsing In reply to P-rophetess [2014-06-21 23:23:50 +0000 UTC]

Vanellope is kick-ass and cute, but she's not part of the official Disney Princess franchise as defined by Walt Disney company, nor does it seem like she will soon (Anna will probably join, and Elsa may or may not, since she is Queen for most of the movie). Disney has put Vanellope under "other princesses", which includes Giselle and Eilonwy.
