The death of all character in the end of Ideon
The death of Iris in megaman X4
and so on
Well, for me, killing main character or side character is kind of popular nowadays. It sometime make the series stand up and memorable. Oh I forget to mention, Tackle in the kamen rider Stronger. She sacrifices herself to save stronger on ep30.

Technically, Tackle did not "sacrifice herself". That's something many fans get wrong about her.
She died from poisoning and never had the choice to avert this. But she still fought untill the end, to safe her friend from suffering the same fate.
That was, at least in my opinion, far more heroic than simply giving her life for Stronger's.

It's called manlyness, hell Riderman died by riding a nuke and detonating it in the atmosphere, thats when v3 gave him the kamen rider title. Hell Gurren lagann had like nearly every character die towards the end.
Manly tears were shed.

Ya, it seem that most of the "character killing" plot happen on Japanese anime and TV series.
