Description 844 waiting to get serviced - Union Pacific Yard - Cheyenne, WY

Every 100 miles, the locomotive's 16 main rods must be greased. The job requires about 4 pounds of grease per stop.

Every morning, a semitrailer truck delivers oil to fill a 6,000 - gallon bunker. The engine uses 15 to 16 gallons of oil per mile.

The engine's lubricators are refilled with oil every night.

The 844 will use 125 gallons to 150 gallons per mile, depending on the load. The tender holds 23,500 gallons of water, but the train also will pull a 30,000- gallon "water bottle,"

The water must be tested and treated, though.
You can't have hard water in the boiler.

What's with the DD40X? Wouldn't that slow the 844 down?
