at least it was used for parts - for 844 and not scraped - then again would have been nice to see run with the others

thanks - and to tell the truth - i wish it wasn't there - would make the scene more nostalgic looking ?
i did capture 844 unassisted between Medicine Bow, WY and Hanna, WY last year on her way to Portland OR

22 cars long...both engines could probably achieve top speed hauling this train by themselves. Not that they would, but could, would, and should are many different things.

i think the diesel is there for 2 things - safety - like if the have to un-hook for some reason and they'd have a back-up - if something happens to the steam locom. and to power the lights for the other cars ???

trainboi In reply to eDDie-TK [2011-08-03 17:47:01 +0000 UTC]
The cars' lights are run by electric generators in the trucks. The diesel is there for the safety of the train, as there's always a possibility of problems with steam engines.

I was referring to the diesel.
The EMD DDA40X was a 6,600 hp (4.9 MW) D-D diesel-electric locomotive built by the General Motors EMD division of La Grange, Illinois for the Union Pacific Railroad. Nicknamed "Centennial" and "Big Jack", it uses two diesel engines (each providing 3,300 hp (2.5 MW)), and although recent locomotive designs such as the AC6000CW and SD90MAC have come close, the DDA40X remains the most powerful single-unit diesel locomotive type ever built. It is also the longest single-unit diesel locomotive ever built. Taken from wikipedia. More here:

But the 844 looks great nonetheless. Nice one Eddie.

Hey, safety isn't a joking matter at the railroad (says the janitor who must wear a neon green reflective shirt and blue helmet with eye protection to clean Alaska Railroad passenger cars...)...
I blame OSHA for the insanity. Just stick your usual park playground equipment in the middle of the rail yard, and you can't even climb on it without a safety harness!

LOL. Fortunately the madness hasn't reached Niles Canyon, where they dress as real railroaders!
