Description

Map depicting the Roman empire during the XII century, when it was ruled by the Komnenian dynasty.
I tried to emulate the style of that good old Shepherd historical atlas which was really hard to do considering I'm really not that familiar with digital tools (and precise sources are so scarce and sometime even contradictory, especially when it comes to the provinces/themes).

I think you captured Shepherd's style perfectly. Nicely done!

Thank you!
I mostly used Century Schoolbook here.

Manzikert killed the empire, afterwards everyone challenged them whenever possible, delaying the inevitable.

The impact of the defeat at Mantzikert has been greatly exaggerated: the rivalry between the aristocratic clans, 50 years of mismanagement and the inability for Constantinople to understand the threat which the Seldjoukids represented are the main reasons for the gradual setback of the empire.

This map is very nicely done, in the 19th century style.
Did you create it or scanned it?

Thank you,
I entirely created it digitally but I relied a lot on this map which comes from my favorite historical atlas (though being published in the early 1910s makes it somewhat outdated by today's standards) by Bill Shepherd.

As we say in French, "A chef never gives his recipes."

I have old atlases and seeing your work is like turning the pages of one of them.
That's really a great job!

I'll submit it in several groups...

Well, that's the best kind of compliment I could hope for for that thing

And thank you very much for that!
