Supersaurus had the longest neck of any dinosaur known – it stretched 15 meters (49 feet) from its shoulders to its skull, about the length of one-and-a-half double decker buses. We know this as it is one of the biggest dinosaurs to have left us a near-complete skeleton, a cast of which stands on display at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center in the USA. Standing approximately 34 meters (112 feet) long, this was an even larger relative of the better-known Diplodocus. It was discovered amid the clutter of Late Jurassic sauropod fossils at Colorado’s Dry Mesa Quarry. The site holds a notorious jumble of old bones: it is thought that a drought led thousands of dinosaurs to die of starvation, and then a flash flood washed their carcasses to this spot, where they sank into mud and became fossilised.
