Vision: The revelation that the Doctor and Lyra were allowed to escape so that yet another jerk with an agenda can do whatever horrifying and stupid thing he has planned is fitting. That's because most of the Doctor's stories end like this.
Originality: While it's true that this sort of end-one-story to begin another is not new, the new antagonist is something I've never seen before.
Technique: Being introduced to a new set of characters at the last moment sort of highlights the fact that the three engaged in the failed rescue mission aren't the only ones who've faced something horrific in the last few days.
Impact: I should think that the Doctor's bad mood is going to affect how he acts in the next chapter.
