Yes, this is a purple whale. And yes, it is flying. ='3Let me just say that this is something the girl (the one on the back of the whale) is dreaming and stuff. I actually hope to use this in an animation someday, if I can like, think of a decent little story to go with it. ='D

Oh, it'll still be a while before I'll be illustrating though.
I'm right now studying Graphics Design, with my main option being Illustration. Currently in my first year, which means I still have at least three more to go after this one (if all goes well). So I doubt I'll have any books out soon, sadly.
And I'm sure you'll be an illustrator someday! Just keep on drawing and I'm sure you'll get there.

no, but it was made into a NZ movie called - Whale rider, a film by Niki Caro.

In a small New Zealand coastal village, Maori claim descent from Paikea, the whale rider. In every generation, a male heir has succeeded to the cheifly title. When twins are born and the boy dies, Koro, the cheif is unable to accept his grand daughter Pai as a future leader. 
Great movie, has won a few awards.
