Ahh great suggestion for lighting! Someone else also mentioned it didn't really have a clear lightsource (i'm scared of fucking it up haha). I might go back in and fix that.

i always make a white layer, with color burn and a black layer with color dodge and play around with that
you cant possibly fuck it up that way ;D

Nah, i don't like the look it gives a painting with the burn tool so i usually kind of paint it manually, anyway.. i fixed it up a bit (not THAT much though).

Fixed it, made the reflections on her skin more white rather than yellow.. (Thank god for the color balance and hue bars)
You happy nao? xD

haha better xD
not exactly what i meant with temperatures though.
like, try not to just use a darker color of the local color, that looks dull.
i used reds to make it look a bit more interesting, but you could try anything. i always look at this guy for inspiration: pkmike.tumblr.com/ because it all looks so dynamic
like this: i made my color burn layer white, and picked a saturated blue and went over it with about 50% opacity i.imgur.com/Cqidtcg.jpg
then made a color dodge layer black, and went over it with a yellow
this way the colors are way more dynamic
you dont have to do it as drastic as i did, but this is more to prove a point ;D
something someone sayd once: try to push it until it looks ugly, only then do you know how far you can go

Well, i know how to use different colors for shadow and light (i have been using that technique for quite some time) and i even applied it here, i thought it was a bit too extreme in your example though, which is what i meant with that it has that burn tool effect, it's very obvious to me and i never liked the looks of it, looks a bit amateurish imho, i don't like to use "tricks" too much, i don't want to rely on all of the tools in Photoshop, i'd rather learn to actually paint it.
And thanks for the link, that guy makes some really awesome stuff!!

also, shadows are generally blue because of the sky
A clear sunny day has 3 systems of illumination, the sun itself, the blue sky, and the reflected light from illuminated objects.
maybe this old journal of mine helps: krnflks.deviantart.com/journal…
im not updating it anymore though

There's a LOT of stuff in there man! I'll take some time to read through them.
I need to work on values and stuff, i feel like it's one of my weak points right now.
I also have a few sources that help me a lot in different departments, did you ever check out the Sycra.net forum? Lots of digital artists there, most are kind of around our level, some better and some worse, either way.. They often do Google Hangout sessions where they do theme drawings and just kind of socialize, most people also have a public sketchbook on the forum (pretty great for getting feedback on daily sketches or things you don't want to post on deviantart). If you don't know what to draw maybe try conceptartsessions.com, it's really great for quick character, creature and environmental concept speedpaints. Assuming you weren't yet aware of these websites haha! (I'm kind of self-taught so i get pretty much all info from the internet)
