Description An original train of metro line M1 of Budapest, Hungary on a display at the line's depot for no apparent reason. It is fully operational and is occasionally used for nostalgic rides on Line M1.

If I'm not mistaken, this baby is the oldest operational electric underground motor carriage in existence. It was built in 1896, was in service up until 1973 - that's 78 years - and was renovated in 1995, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of Line M1. Fun fact: line M1 was originally intended to be a regular tram line, but the then-mayor of the city wanted no tracks on Andrássy út (Bouldevard). So two rival tram-operating companies joined forces and made the European continent's very first metro line - which, to this day, has the characteristics of a tram line running underground. So this means that Hungary ordered the very first low-floor trams in the world! Hell yeah, two records for the city!
(The other one is operating the currently longest passenger tram in the world, which will be soon surpassed - by Budapest...)

The original rolling stock consisted of three types of motor carriages: Nos. 1-10 were metal covered, No. 11-19 were wood paneled and No. 20 was the "Royal Carriage." Of these, five survived:
- This one
- Two in the Millenium Underground Museum : one similar to this one (No. 19 ), the other one is a metal-covered car (No. 1 ). Fun fact 2: the museum is the original, now abandoned tunnel for the line. (The museum opened in 1975 at Deák Ferenc tér, which is the junction point for lines M1, M2, M3)
- One in Hannover, Germany (No. 12)
- One at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennekbunkport, Maine, USA

Additionally, two extra passenger trailers remained in existence: one attached to the metal covered car (No. 81 ) and an other one used as storage room (No. 95)

Wow! It's actually nice to finally see No. 12 on someone else's picture too! Big thanks to submitting it on DA! And of course, thanks for letting me know!
(Just a minor fun fact: the carriage on your picture misses several details, including its pantographs... Although "minor" details are not relevant; the most important thing is that it's intact and well preserved.)
