Description
This is my personal interpretation of Vishous (or V) from the excellent Blackdagger Brotherhood novels by J.R Ward.
The painting is based on a picture of model David Gandy, who is the closest Ive come to finding my perfect embodiment of this particular character. He looks appropriately angry all the time, much like V himself.
I kept everything fairly loose this time. I used the chalk setting quite alot and I like the effect it had on the skin.
I also included his leather glove and am happy with the result.
The tattoo was the biggest challenge. Obviously the description of it in the books is vague enough that I couldve done anything. But I kept it simple, not wanting to get too bogged down in the details.
Hope you like! I intend to do a series of these, covering all the main guys and gals in the books.

In regards to Jane, after being fairly underwhelmed by her to begin with, Ive more or less accepted her now. Im not thrilled with her as V's shellan but its who we've got and ultimately she's useful in the BDB universe.

Perhaps you can help me out here...how were you underwhelmed by her? Was it b/c she was human? Or was it something else? I just don't get the hate...but I'm only at Lover Mine so maybe her character gets annoying or something? Who would have been a better shellan for V? He's their field medic so him working side-by-side with her made sense to me.
(I will say this much: I am kinda turned off by all the praise everyone gives her as a surgeon--no doctor is that gifted--and while she is their only doctor and the Brothers do get hurt a lot, she seemed to have a lot more scenes than books 6-8 really needed her to have . . .Β in fact, I'm almost starting to wonder if she's turned into a self-insert character --or maybe she always was?--... since Jane does kinda look like J.R. Ward--I know Ward has long hair but the picture on the back of the books makes it look like her hair is short and since she always wears those sunglasses in her pics who knows if her eyes are green like Jane's?--and Ward did work in healthcare and spent many years as Chief of Staff at one of the best academic medical centers in the nation {according to J.R. Ward's bio}. And it is likely that V is Ward's favorite character and she loves him as much as Jane does?...perhaps that's why the fans don't like Jane? It seems to me that fans instinctively can tell when a character is a self-insert and it turns them off to the character. That's why so many fans hate Bella from Twilight: because she is Stephenie Meyer--Meyer even described Bella once and it was as if she was describing herself).Β

As far as Im aware Jane is not a self insert. But she is based on Wards best friend who is a doctor. I can't rememeber her name but shes mentioned I think in the book acknowledgements sometimes and she goes by the nickname Doc, like Jane is Doc Jane to the brothers.
As Mary Sues (or Stus) go I think Wards personality is more dominant in the brothers themselves, and that is why her female characters are notably weaker in contrast. Apart from Marissa and Xhex, I have not taken to any of the shellans in a big way and find their characterisations similar in several ways.
It hasnt really bothered me terribly, but it just seemed worse for V's HEA because he had so much build up and time invested in him. At that time in the series, I distinctly felt that we were headed somewhere else completely different with V. Then Jane was the outcome and it was quite frankly a bit bland. It didnt have the kind of impact that I felt V deserved. I personally have loved Jane to be more severe, more clinical, more humourless than V.Β But she ultimately was just another run of the mill female character (and the ghost thing was just complete nonsense.)
That being said, there were tons of other things apart from Jane that let Lover Unbound down to me. Ward has mentioned several times that V is a nightmare of a character to work with. She clearly struggles with his plot line and I think it shows whenever she tackles him exclusively. I think Lover Unleashed was basically her attempt to clarify some parts of Lover Unbound. It didnt really work and it was at the cost of another character but it proved to me that Ward really heard her fans when they told her that V and Jane didnt quite meet the mark first time around.
But then this is all just my own musings. The BDB really does spark alot of theories.

Ooohh now that I think about it, you're right; her personality does fit the brothers better. I agree that the females are quite weak (although I have to disagree with one: I think Beth is a stronger character than the other weak females).
I did too. I thought V needed someone who was a vampire, so when he started to fall for a human I was confused. I didn't think that was possible or even desired by vampires since the majority of them seem to look down on the human race as monkeys or lesser creatures. It would have made Jane a lot stronger if she had been more severe, more clinical, and more humorless than V...and yes the ghost thing was kinda "hmmm okaaay. Why not just reincarnate her like you did Darius?" But Ward is the Word of God in this series so I just rolled with it.
That said, the whole breakup scene made me cry a lot, and I rarely do that with novels (kinda clinical and objective when it comes to fiction b/c of my job).
Wow. He's a nightmare to work with? So not her favorite. Interesting. I guess I based favoritism on how often a character was mentioned in a book where he/she was not the main focus and he's mentioned quite a bit in the other books. Damn, now I'm going to have to readΒ Lover Unleashed to see that clarification.Β I stopped after Lover Mine b/c I wasn't really interested in Payne and Manny's story and I knew that Book 11 is about Quinn and Blay and I was so over that pairing in Lover Mine. I didn't want to read a whole book focused on them.

This pic was done when I was using Corel Painter Essentials and I think I largely used the airbrush with that program, then a bit of chalk over the last surface.
