Description Painted this on the ferry back from Ancona to Patra; this was the east-looking view of the Ionian sea, a little after Igoumenitsa. To be more exact, it is more a collage of views, as the clouds kept coming and going, and the light and ambiance changing. (Then the sun came out in full and I had to change seats as it became too warm to paint! I finished the picture from memory.)

This is almost surely not Ithaca, either (more like Paxi or Kefallonia), but I had a sense of coming home, which made me think of it.

---

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

C. P. Cavafy, Ithaka

A fitting quote to your illustration. (Cavafy: Except the lack of callow boys.)

Though, typical of an American, I think, I have a hard time comprehending snow in this! My brain is cowering against its assumptions: Wha--? There's no snow over there! Just on the top of Mt. Olympus, you know, where mythology is made! (laugh)

Snow? There is snow? *laughs* The white dots were supposed to be sprinkles.

Cavafy has deeply influenced our modern perception on ancient greece and hellenism in general. I think that alone would make him an important cultural figure. But he's an excellent poet on top of it.

I wonder if the translation for this poem is better in your book! What do you think?

Your sprinkles are translating as snow to me. (laugh) But ocean spray soothes my poor misled brain.

I'll have to check this Ithaca against the Ithaca I have at home. It is likely my favorite, so I don't mind at all! The translating, though, IS really masterful I... think.

It's amazing, almost as if you had captured the beautiful, ever-young spirit of the Mediterranean sea itself.

Thanks! There's something about the Mediterranean that I find very uplifting. I think I'd find sailing in the ocean somewhat scary; but here, it's "mare nostrum".

Painted indeed! And somewhat messily at that.
