Beautiful. The simple color scheme, the texture of the water, the small dark boat against the bright open hills and sky; all create a mood of tranquility and a sense of distance. The dark, swirled bush in the foreground adds contrast to the pale openness of the rest of the image, unifying it.

This is really beautiful. It almost looks like a photograph until a closer observation and the swirls are magnificent.

Makes sense; I stayed relatively faithful to the background in the photo reference (it started as practice). Anyhow, thanks.

as usual i adore the way you paint, and reading that this only took two hours really shocked me because of the amount of detail, lovely work!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eilidh In reply to FlameWolf82 [2011-01-05 08:19:09 +0000 UTC]

Custom brushes and texture work help achieve a high level of detail quickly. Although a similar effect can be done with custom brushes, too. But in both cases the detail is a bit illusory.

Thanks!

Who O_O Spectacular. The plants on the foreground are particularly amazing. Small problem: the symmetry in some of the stalks, it stands out because it seems unnatural.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eilidh In reply to Majnouna [2011-01-05 05:31:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
Do you mean the stalks are too straight, maybe? (I painted them in a fury, and very randomly, and to be honest I'm having trouble finding the symmetry you mention!)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Majnouna In reply to eilidh [2011-01-05 05:40:05 +0000 UTC]

The two highest stalks each have two blossoms (?) that are level with each other. Roughly it looks like this:

O O
| |
O O
| |

By the law of chaos, even when we draw randomly, order always appears I always have to keep an eye on any random texture I'm making to make sure it stays random.

DarkMemoirs [2011-01-04 19:05:55 +0000 UTC]

Mystical. I love it. The misty smoke seems to almost make a celtic symbol. It really reminds me out of something of an old tale: a priestess of Avalon or somewhat.

eilidh In reply to DarkMemoirs [2011-01-04 19:11:42 +0000 UTC]

I was actually half-tempted to make a reference to the Lady of the Lake (though the figure is probably male).

Also, I think the intricate-looking mist is influenced by the beautiful artwork of The Secret of Kells (mentioned in the blog post), which took patterns from the illuminations of the Book of Kells and incorporated them into the animation & environments. Mesmerising!

DarkMemoirs In reply to eilidh [2011-01-04 19:19:42 +0000 UTC]

I've seen The Secret of Kells around but never actually watched it. Kind of want to now.

I really enjoyed watching the progress of this piece, too. What a great start to the new year. ^_^

I fully recommend it. One of the most beautiful animated films I've seen.

And thanks!

The atmosphere here is so well done!
I love how you use the brushes and opacity to make it look calm and fluid at the same time.
The cold color palette is very well handled and that little red touch of the flowers on the right keep it interesting.
Very, very good job!
Kudos

I like the misty effect under the hills in the distance and the boat and the figure looking sharp and edgy; it contrasts with the rest of the picture well.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

eilidh In reply to eastcorkpainter [2011-01-04 15:51:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

In retrospect, I think the vegetation on the left should have been more misty, too, though. Might fix that later.
