Shizugozen from the Noh play "Funabenkei".

This piece is based on "The Tale of the Heike" and "Azuma Kagami".

It is a popular Noh play in which relatively well-known historical figures, such as Minamoto Yoshitsune, Musashibo Benkei, Shizuka Gozen, and Taira no Tomomori, appear.

The main roles in the first half of the play are usually the same, but in this Noh play, the first half is played by Shizuka Gozen and the second half by the grudge spirit of Taira no Chimori, two completely different roles.

The Noh actor wears a kosode made of gold and silver colored threads called "iroirikaraori," which is the most luxurious of all Noh costumes. It is considered the most luxurious of all Noh costumes.

Synopsis

Minamoto no Yoshitsune was successful in defeating the Heike clan, but was suspected by Yoritomo and was pursued by the Kamakura clan.

Yoshitsune, together with Benkei and his faithful followers, arrives at Omonoura in Settsu Province to flee to the west.

Benkei advises Yoshitsune to return Shizuka to the capital, saying that it would be difficult for her to continue on her difficult journey as a woman.

Yoshitsune agrees, and Benkei goes to another inn where Shizuka is staying to talk to her, but Shizuka refuses and says she will go to see Yoshitsune.

Benkei has no choice but to return with Shizuka to Yoshitsune's inn.

Yoshitsune praised Shizuka for her perseverance and ordered her to return to the capital and wait for the right moment.

Shizuka apologized for having doubted Benkei's decision, and Benkei wept as Yoshitsune and Shizuka parted.

Shizuka shed tears, saying that she would spare her life until they met again.

Yoshitsune ordered Benkei to pour a glass of wine for Shizuka, and a farewell party was held.

At the parting party, Shizuka took the form of a white clapper and danced a dance, praying for Yoshitsune's future and wishing to see him again, and seeing him off with tears in her eyes.
