Just catching up on stuff.  The original format for Giggler's Lament was as a booklet.  So, the layout was paced so turning a page revealed the payoff of the tape joke.

nice thinking! indeed the format should be considered when doing a comic
I try to make the same with my comics. They're published here on DA first and one page at a time usually, so I try to plan them taking that in cosideration

Format can make a big difference in how a reader will react to a story, as the layout impacts the pacing, which can impact the tension, emotion, etc, etc.
  And I think the one page at a time is even trickier, because you are asking a lot of only 4 or 5 panels, to sustain whatever you are trying to achieve.  I've never actually tried to compose the one page at a time thing; I am sure it is probably challenging and frustrating.
