Description This is my first attempt at creating a vector robot and I'm actually quite pleased with the result! I spent a LOT of time coming up with ideas and sketches looking for something that looks right. Major influences come from the Battlestar Galactica and Star Wars universe. This is Part 3 of The Way Beyond Tomorrow series and introduces one of the nemeses of humankind.

Part 3 - The Harbingers of Doom

Not much is known about them other than the fact that they were the foot soldiers of the machine conquerors. None have ever been seen before until the moment of the apocalypse. Their origin was largely unknown as well, mysteriously appearing as if out of nowhere in large numbers after the bombardment and destruction of populated cities. Their primary mission was to exterminate and cleanse out all of humankind once an area had been occupied.

There were very few survivors, if any at all. To those who were lucky enough to slip away undetected, these mechanical horrors were known to them as the Harbingers of Doom.

And soon, the hunt for survivors will begin.

oddly enough... it looks almost exactly like a cylon from the new battlestar galactica series

Hey buddy Yep, actually that's where the idea came from, plus some randomness from the japanese Ultraman episodes.. hehe

By the kickass look hes got, I'm sure he dosn't have a voice of a wierd baby, like in the new star wars movie.

Dude, this beats star wars anytime.
Good job.

You pulled a very nice 3D-like effect with the vectors and this robot... I would say that perhaps choosing a reddish color for the robot and a reddish background was bad... but I like the effect that he's kinda emerged from the setting... almost blending with it... If you plan to add a metallic luster then that will make the robot stand out a bit... while hopefully keeping him still somewhat connected to the barren world behind him...

ekster In reply to LightmanEclipse [2005-05-09 08:47:46 +0000 UTC]

True, the red does seem a little overdone to a degree and in hindsight I could have tried a more apocalyptic violet or something.. hehe. I've played around with making the metallic luster more pronounced, but I couldn't get it to blend in with the background and the robot stuck out far more than what I hoped for, so I went back to a duller reddish hue. I could have probably spent more time in dinking around with the colors more, but I've already spent way too much time doing that and I just felt like finishing it Thanks very much once again for such a wonderfully thought out critique! Another helpful lesson learned

A good piece with clean lines and the colours lend it atmosphere. I think the falling star draws your eye in the wrong direction, you should try to put details in so that your eye travels along them and lands on the main character.

But what do I know...??

ekster In reply to Duck-Star [2005-04-17 14:56:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much for your kind words and observations, and that is a good suggestion as well. I'll have to play with it some more and see what I can come up with to lead the eye to the character

Anytime, I appreciate you replying to my comments.
From the many books I have read artists always suggest putting paths in that draw the eye along them and lead them to the main character.
If you look at my Bounty Grunter dev here.. [link] I have attempted this in this picture by making all the lines of the distant mountains lead to the main character. What do you think ?

NICE one here! Um, minor, minor nitpick... wouldn't the plural of nemesis be nemeses, kind of like crisis and crises?

Great, suggestive shadowing and gradient work, and this series looks like it's taking you into whole new directions... the mood, subject, and dire implications here are a far cry from "Cafe Atlantis" Great as always, I look forward to future additions to this conceptual project!

Thanks very much for your kind words, and helpful fix! You're right.. it SHOULD be nemeses.. my bad! I'm glad you're enjoying the concept as well, and it is definitely making me explore new directions that I haven't touched on before. Heck, before I made this particular piece, I had no idea that I'd ever create an evil robot soldier thingy. That and it's really fun to do something like this, and ya know what, your story concept / comic panels were one of the inspirations that lead me down this path!

Ah damn, your already submitted. I just wanted to suggest that its better to use different colors on the background or robor.(my keyboard broke down)

You see, right now they have much alike colors and it sort of distracts from the robot. My suggestion would be a use of metal colors, any will do

But besides that i think its awsome
