The hole in it's mouth is actually a yellow light meant to match the eyes.
Sorry if this offends, but I just like to give some quick example of improvements, because I feel that both people often benefit from it.

lol, I feel like these designers are just thinking of random things in the world and turning them into Pokemon without having any logic whatsoever about it but then turning into some soul or energy living inside it to make it living and giving it ghost type. I find it a bit lazy. I mean when I look at this its just a giant lump of sand with eyes and a hole and I mean whats it's real form without all that sand? Why couldn't we have a sandcastle Pokemon that wasn't just a sandcastle but something else mixed in with this concept. I'm really interested in how much Pokemon is changing.Ive never felt this feeling of curiosity over a Pokemon game.

Actually, you are somewhat wrong in that regard; or perhaps, everything you said tbh. That "random things", are actually more related than you think: Notice how Alolan is certainly the most tropical region(being Hawaii), so they will very much put things Pokemon that are related to tropical regions at ANY chance they get. Even if it may be Sandcastle, it's a high chance for appeal, and more pokemon.

Also, how do you know that it's JUST an Sandcastle? Sure, still very simple, but Pokemon doesn't just make random Monsters, actually literally most of the pokemon are based of something, especially around cool Mythology, rumor/facts, and puns. Look up some Sandcastle mythology and such, you may be surprised. I find it very belivable that the Sandcastle has a ghastly ghost typing for a interestingly dark reason.Β

Lastly, remember Pokemon are monsters; most of the time a far-cry from gross animals. If you find it a bit lazy for monsters being alive in the first place by having bits of energy inside them (especially a GHOST type), Simply do some hard cover research, headcanons, and post a Sunaaba guide to quench that. I suggest looking up 'Mutitus' or TipsyRa1d3n for guidance.Β

I don't think my opinion is wrong, I was referring more to the design aspect more than the backstory and personality of the Pokemon. I absolutely love the information that has been given to us for some of these Pokemon! Pyukumuku seemed so weird to me but I fell in love with it when I read its information in the Pokemon website!
I must correct myself on what I said previously targeting many of the current Pokemon. I think I just seem to dislike this one specifically instead. I do hope they do not continue doing similar things to this though this is my opinion. When you see the two designs, sure they might have an incredible story within them about some spirit and sinking people into the sand and sinister things like that similar to many other ghost types. Though I think a spirit haunting an object or taking the form of one is commonly what ghost types are.I feel as though both designs could have been worked out a little more. A mound of sand with a shovel stuck to it and a hole for it's mouth is not the most interesting thing. I highly doubt it's anything else but a pile of sand.
What you are saying about not making random objects and animals into monsters is so true but the problem is I do not see that with this line of Pokemon, I do not see anything else beyond it being a pile of sand and a sand castle. Might the stories say something so unique and cool let it be but design wise, I was really hoping for something more smart and more structured for a sand castle Pokemon. I really can't wait to read about this Pokemon but it is not at all appealing to me visually. Thats all I was saying, I hope GameFreak has some interesting designs up their sleeves to make up for this because this just doesn't work for me. Anyways I think I've shown a little too much attention for a Pokemon that I don't even like!
