That awkward moment when Merope Gaunt (in case you aren't aware, she is a minor character introduced in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) is supposed to be really ugly and then I produce this instead....my bad?Okay okay pretend it's like...what Tom Riddle saw when he was all hopped up on the Amortentia she's holding. That's what we're going to go with. Alright.
Anyways, this pose was actually going to be for a commission, but then we decided to go with a different pose, but I still really liked this one and I realized that it was perfect for the Merope I had in mind. Ironically this was extremely quick for the most detailed female portrait I've ever drawn...probably because I referenced a pose image heavily. It's a lot faster when you have something to look at! Also hooray for skin brushes. The freckles are hand drawn but some textures are from a brush pack.

I know she was. It's a bit disturbing how far inbreeding goes in pureblood families....okay a lot disturbing.
I just wished that he could have at least given some support financially or taken the baby once Tom was born. Merope's sins shouldn't have been transferred to Tom by default. I mean, I understand why he went off, but I just can't stand the thought that so much death could have been avoided if only Tom had a family.

In some cultures in the real world it is also the done thing. The adverse effect of cousins marrying cousins starts to happen if it is compounded for multiple generations. It hugely increases the risks of congenital defects.
So that was the Ministry's job. Where were they? They were supposed to clear up magical problems in their world, not leave it to what passed for the muggle social services in the 'twenties. It most certainly was not the responsibility of her muggle victim! In the western world, even feminists tear into anyone guilty of victim blaming, even in cases where the victim was a man. *Looking at your comment above*

I know, and I understand that better now that I'm 21 as opposed to when I was around 18. Surprising how much you can change your mind in a few years. I can't even remember what I was thinking. I suppose I just felt bad for them all since so much could have been avoided if the system wasn't so screwed. The Ministry has proven to be more often useless than not, even when they were in Harry's time, I can only imagine how bad it was before. And it got to me when JK said that Tom would have turned out differently had Merope lived. Still a fucked up way to conceive, but I hated that Tom had to pay for Merope's sins in the end which in turn led to Sr's death. Goes to show how horrible mental instability can be.

That is such a cool idea to draw her how her husband sees her even if it was an accident. Its beautiful. I think her eyes should still be staring in opposite directions, though, it would be an interesting effect to.
Pretty people have bad days were they look awful, Merope had a bad life, i imagine her being pretty under it all.

Funnily enough, I've imagined Merope Gaunt to be pretty underneath the filth and dirt she was living under, and without her abusive father and brother around it would've given her alot more confidence to "seduce" Tom Riddle I. Beautiful painting, love the hair detail

You know what? I don't care if she's meant to be ugly, I always have mental images of her being pretty beneath all the dirt. She has a pretty facial expression, as if she's now happy that her brother and father have been arrested, know what I mean? It's also kind of seductive. I like it.
