A stunning piece, with so many elements that it makes the picture a work of art.

First, composition. Fantastic. You've brought just the right blend of sharpness and blur to make it appear as if we are viewing it through a mask underwater, hiding in the kelp as the merman goes about his business, unaware of the shark swooping in behind him. The light beams shining through the water beautifully illuminate some aspects while leaving others in shadows that seem to dance before the viewer's eyes, further enhancing the realism of the piece.

Second, subject. I have a soft spot for the classic mythical creatures, merfolk, centaurfolk, dragons, unicorns, etc. This one is fascinating to me for its uniqueness as well as its form. Here we have a mer who is hunting. He has some skill with metalwork for the trident is well crafted as is the horn and golden belt about his waist. He is not above scavenging from human wrecks as he has a leather baldric holding his horn clearly from seventeenth century human world, which would rot fairly quickly away meaning he would either have to treat it with magic or replace it constantly, indicating a courageous soul or he knows that humans of that time are helpless in water. His tail is reminiscent of certain fish, though I feel (just a little only, mind) that it is the weakest point of the painting. The tail seems hard used, as if he's not been feeling too well lately and might have had issues hunting, so he is taking risks. The fuzz on the tail makes this critical organ seem unlikely to be able to propel him very fast, as most fish have hard tails that end in a definite line. Still, this is a fantasy piece, and as such the tail can be whatever the artist wants it to look like. It looks really difficult to draw and I wonder how long it took to bring such exquisite detail out, but it was well done.

Enough of the merman, on to the shark! He, or likely She, as in most species of sharks the female is the larger, is well done, giving a shadowy menace with just enough definition that it is still clear what is sneaking up on our poor hunter here. And the size! For it to already be that large, and apparently eager to swallow our merman whole or in half, the shark would have to be around thirty feet long, if not bigger. Not even Deep Blue, the largest shark on record, is quite that big! But neither is she far off from that size, which gives a person pause as they realize that this size of shark is not far off the realm of possibility, and we might actually meet one someday while diving or snorkeling. The world outside of paintings is full of wonders and secrets to make even our deepest fantasies seem normal.

Finally, technique. Stunning. The delicate details you added to your piece, light on the moss, movement of the seaweed, the definition of corals slowly being lost into shadowy shapes in the distance, bring it to life.

I can't wait to see what happens next! A fantastic piece, Elderscroller, as always you never disappoint!

Thanks very much, snore for your detailed thoughts about the painting, always a pleasure to read those! This piece was really fun to work on as I love the underwater realms (should paint more of those ) )
