Description This is one of the windows in the nave of St Andrews Cathedral. The cathedral took over a hundred years to build, and so its architecture shows a transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. The nave originally had Romanesque windows (with rounded tops), but when they extended the nave to match the dimensions of the new cloister, they had to add new windows.

One interesting detail about this is that the Augustinian canons were already living in the cathedral precinct when construction on the new cathedral began, but including a cloister for them was not part of the bishop's original plan. Eventually they got their own grand cloister, though, necessitating the extra construction. In a way, this window represents a triumph of the Augustinian community over the bishop, in what was often a relationship fraught with difficulty.

Here's a really cool video showing the virtual reconstruction of the cathdral in its glory days: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BvWg4…

St Andrews! What a coincidence - there is a conference in St Andrews this January (medievalmaterialities.wordpres… ) I have applied to take part in it so, fingers crossed, I might have a chance to visit this wonderful place. I would really like to! Thank you for sharing this shot - such details are really pleasurable to look at. I had no idea about the conflict between Augustinian community and the bishop in St Andrews. Interesting - I understand the Augustinians formed a chapter of the cathedral yes? Also, thank you for the link to the reconstruction - indeed, it looks very cool!

Hi! Thank you very much for asking Few days before Christmas, I got an email from St Andrews saying that they accept my paper so yes, it is very likely that I will visit St Andrews  (19-20 January).

The only negative is that I still do not know any details - they told me that they will email me the timetable and some additional info so that I can prepare but I had no news from them since then.... Still, I am very exited about this trip and I look forward to seeing the cathedral of St Andrews. Are there any other places you can recommend?  I hope I will get at least few minutes of sun to get some photos of the cathedral... Hopefully, they will be good enough to post on DA.... Again, thank you for asking and let me know if you have any suggestions concerning places to see Also, all the best in 2017!

Ooooh, that conference looks so cool! I'm going to have to try to attend. I hope you get in! What is the title of the paper you've applied to present? I'm sure you would love St Andrews - lots of awesome medieval ruins! And yes, to answer your question, the Augustinians formed the cathedral chapter. It was a little contentious though because there was an earlier group of secular canons who had been living in the cathedral, the Culdees, who were shunted to the side when the Augustinians were brought in by the Scottish king. However, the Culdees "rebranded" themselves as a collegiate chapel just outside the boundaries of the cathedral wall and often had royal and episcopal support against the priory.

I love your informational descriptions! And the photo is beautiful, great contrast between such a deep blue of the sky to the grays and earth tones of the stonework!
